Bhuj is the small city in Kutch region of Gujarat state. This city came into limelight after the INDO-PAK war of 1971 which took place on 8th of December in 1971.After a long years this story has again got limelight after the launch of trailer of Ajay Devgan's new movie BHUJ: THE PRIDE OF INDIA. Other than reel life there is truly a real story lies in Bhuj INDO-PAK war which makes all Indian proud. This war has not been won if the women of Bhuj city haven't supported our Indian Air forces. This war set the example of women empowerment in India.
During 1947 ,when India got freedom Pakistan was divided into two parts i.e. West and East Pakistan. There was so much disturbance in East Pakistan because of that they wanted a freedom and were fighting for a separate country for themselves. This protest took a large extent during 1970s and India supported them in this protest and in 1971 War of Liberation took place in Bangladesh. And India fought this war on two fronts ;first from West Pakistan on 1 side and other with East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). India also trained the Bangladeshi Mukti Bahini. On 3rd December,1971 Pakistan carried out pre-emptive airstrikes and launched a "Chengiz Khan " operation and through this operation they wanted to target the 12 of India's frontline airfields. And the first target was Bhuj Airbase ;on 8th december,1971 Pakistan attacked at night with more than 14 Napalm Bombs over the Bhuj Airstrip. And the airstrip was totally destroyed and India was not able to launch the fighter jets to protect us from another attack. IAF requested BSF for help to rebuild the airstrip but there was shortage of Labours and time was running too.
In feeling of patriotism; 300 Women from a small village, Madhapur of Bhuj district stepped up to rebuilt the airstrip and serve the country in that critical situation. And the famous name came out from this war is the squadron leader “Vijay Karnik” who came across the villages and asked help from villagers. Women and IAF were aware that they are risking their lives but the patriotism and love for the country doesn't allow themselves to step back. These women were used to wear pale green sarees so that they can match with camouflage themselves and whenever the siren rang of attack they used to hide themselves in bushes and took shelters to protect them. Out of these women; A strong women named Valbai Seghani ji came out who was also awarded by PM after 3 years of war and shared all the hard experiences later. And after 72 hours the airstrip was repaired and airstrip was covered with cow dung to protect from enemy. And later on India won this war and a new country called Bangladesh was formed. In 2018, to tribute these ladies; a war memorial called “VIRANGNA SMARAK ” was built.
