Corona has spread havoc all over the world. Meanwhile, the arrival of World Malaria Day reminds us that there are many diseases in the world due to which people get sick every year and succumb to death. World Malaria Day is observed every year on 25 April. It was started in the year 2007. UNICEF started this day so that the attention of the people towards this dreaded disease is because millions of people were dying every year. This year, the theme of World Malaria Day is Zero malaria starts with me.
The World Health Organization has joined hands with RBM for this theme. With the help of which the objective of eradicating malaria can be fulfilled at the grassroots level. According to the World Health Organization's 2019 report, between 2000 and 2014, there has been a drop of nearly 40% in malaria deaths. Whereas in the following years, there was no significant benefit in reducing malaria infection.
Why did it start ?
World Malaria Day was first introduced as African Malaria Day. Because it was intended to reduce deaths in countries of Africa. But in 2007, the World Health Organization decided to celebrate Malaria Day at African level as World Malaria Day in one of its meetings.
Due to malaria
One species of mosquitoes due to malaria disease is that of female aniphilies. Which is caused by Plasmodium parasites which infect these mosquitoes. However, out of the many Plasmodium parasites, only five types of parasites spread malaria to humans. Of which Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for most deaths worldwide. Malaria is caused by these mosquitoes in most of the countries of Africa.
Safety measures
Symptoms of malaria usually begin 10 to 15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. The initial symptoms of which are fever, headache and body cold. The best way to prevent malaria is by using mosquito nets and indoor residual spraying.
World Malaria Day 2020: Theme
The theme of World Malaria Day 2020 is "Zero malaria starts with me."
The WHO has joined the RBM Partnership to eliminate malaria and promote "Zero malaria starts with me". It is a grassroots campaign aimed at eradicating malaria in the political agenda, mobilizing additional resources to empower communities for malaria prevention and care.
According to the WHO, between 2000 and 2014, the number of malaria-related deaths worldwide dropped by 40%, from an estimated 743,000 to 446 000. The WHO's World Malaria Report 2019 states that there was no global benefit in reducing new infections during this period of 2014-2018. Almost as many people have died of malaria in 2018 as compared to a year ago.
World Malaria Day: History
World Malaria Day was developed from Africa Malaria Day which was first organized in 2008. It is basically an event celebrated since 2001 by African governments. He worked towards the Pragati Goal which was aimed at controlling malaria and reducing its mortality in African countries.
In the 60th session of the World Health Assembly, a meeting sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2007 proposed that Africa Malaria Day be recognized as World Malaria Day in order to identify the existence of malaria in countries around the world and bring awareness to people. It should be changed so that efforts can be made to fight against diseases like malaria globally.
World Malaria Day enables new donors to join a global partnership against malaria, and also brings scientific progress to research and educational institutions to the public.
The day gives international partners, companies and foundations a chance to showcase their efforts and show how work is done.
