Sustainability means meeting the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. Sustainability is about “slowness ,care ,flourishing and responsibility.” Whereas ,fashion is all things “exclusive ,sexy ,addictive ,and fast.” The very roots of both these concepts are opposite to each other. But the need of the hour is “sustainable fashion.”

Over the last one decade ,fast fashion has become a trend .Clothing sales have increased incredibly .Fast fashion is basically comparing the prices of two different stores and purchasing the cheaper on. What one needs to remember is that there is a need for apparels to last and good quality products rather than just cheaper ones that end up in landfills in a month or two. Almost one million of clothing items end up in landfills every year. In legitimate sense, the world is drowning in clothes and textiles. Fast fashion has turned us into consumers who are constantly chasing the fantasies to have the latest and perhaps more number of clothing items.

This trend is not only problematically harming the environment but has also proven to be the reason for unethical livelihood of labourers. The factory fire that happened in Bangladesh in 2013 due to poor machinery and unsafe working conditions took away the lives of more than 1000 labourers working there. The billion dollar fashion industries for whom these labourers work , pay as less as 5 cents per hour to their workers.

 The clothing supple chain is very complex. Currently only 5% of the companies globally ,know exactly where and how their raw materials are sourced from. This puts forth the question whether the consumers are sure if their clothing hasn't been manufactured through child labour or if their purchasing decisions do not contribute to human trafficking or environmental degradation. The answer is Ethical Fashion Or Slow fashion Or sustainable fashion. Ethical fashion maximizes the benefits of the people in the community and minimizes the effects on environment.

According to United Nations, the fashion industry is considered to be the second most polluting industry after oil and gas. Over a hundred billion garments are manufactured every year of which every single item  is treated with almost thousand different types of chemicals .This entire process of manufacturing has the greatest share in water pollution and air pollution. These chemicals when enter the soil, often take more than 300 years to completely decompose. Our hunger for fashion is pushing the creatures of this planet to the brink of extinction . 3 / 5 apparels purchased every year end up in landfills in the duration of just 12 months.

The planet is suffocating because of the increasing desire for cheaper clothes. This planet sustains us and every creature we share it with. The choice lies within us. The consumers all over the world need a healthy planet not only to survive but also to inspire the creativity that drives fashion and design and there is only one hope- sustainable fashion .The generation needs to recycle , repurpose ,quality check and of course, consume less.
