Why Depending Solely On Motivation Does Not Work

Hola Lovely Humans!

How's life treating you these days?

Well, tbh we are all stuffed with our rants so maybe let's not pick on your bubble today (and mine as well) [ร—_ร—]

So, coming back to our topic of discussion today which is ~

Ta-da

Drum-rolls Please! ๐Ÿฅ

โ€œDepending solely on motivation won't work for you for long timeโ€

Yes people you read it correctly,  that's exactly what I am stating.

You can compare your motivation or willingness or willpower to work towards your goals with the energy bars on your devices. These energy bars are constantly needed to be refilled after a specific point of time and usage limit in order to work continually.

It is very often that we feel motivated to start afresh on our goals but you certainly know that it doesn't take you long to get exhausted and finally give up! Now you know the reason why. Depending only on your motivation does make it hard for you to continue after some time and after giving up once, you will have to make those hard choices once again which will furthermore decrease your bar of motivation which you filled up in โ€˜theโ€™ time.

It is very obvious and predictable that you will be soon headed to willpower fatigue.

Now that we discussed this, then you surely might be interested in some solutions and tips that might save you from this willpower fatigue.

1.Avoid choices and make it default

This will be the most effective way of making things a little bit easier for you in the long term.

Let me give you an example, if you have set a fitness goal for yourself, then making a choice of getting up early and leave for a walk or run might be difficult in the beginning but if you do it and continue to do it, you will notice that it's not that hard any more because it has now become a second nature to you or default practise for you to get up early and go for a walk.

This strategy surely does saves you much of your time and willpower indeed.

2. Turn your goals into a habit

Tip 1: Start Small

Making huge promises to yourself which you very well know are not that possible for you to achieve at that point of time ends up exhausting you. So start small and gradually increase these steps to reach your goal.

Tip 2: Show Up

No matter what, just show up! This is basic. You gotta do what you gotta do. There's no denying this. This is where you start, by showing up for the things and practices that will lead you to your goals.

Tip 3: Reduce Friction

Making things easier for yourself isn't lazy, it's smart. It's okay if you don't believe it, but what I said is what I said :) Why would you make life harder for yourself so that you could find more reasons to avoid steps that could lead you to your goals. Do what you can right now! Don't pressurise yourself into things which will end up draining you. Make things easier for yourself. Give yourself visual cues, like preparing clothes and shoes for your run, a night before.

Tip 4: Normalise Failure

We are all very guilty of it as anything that would go against our plans would most probably crush our morale. What you need to know is, the only thing that makes a difference is not giving up! Get up every time you are put down. Get hold of yourself yet again and get going!
