Dentistry deals with teeth, gums, hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. BDS mainly focuses on training and introducing the students to the dental sciences and surgeries.Today, dentistry is not restricted to treating just tooth decays but also includes cosmetic dental procedures to improve a person's appearance. It is a compulsory course for the students aspiring to work as dentists at government or private hospital.
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
BDS is a 5 - year undergraduate course for students who want to excel in the field of Dental Sciences. 4 years of classroom + 1 year of internship
The students in their final year are required to do rotational internship for which they are paid.
Subjects like Oral Pathology, Dental Hygiene, Dental Histology, Public Health Dentistry, etc are taught to the students during the span of 5 years of the course.
The study of these subjects provides them with explicit knowledge and skill to practice dentistry as their profession after completion of the course.
The introduction to new fields like periodontal (care of gums and the diseases), oral pathology (diagnosis for diseases that affect the mouth) and orthodontics (straightening and aligning teeth and jaws ) are also part of the BDS course.

10+2 with PCB
A student needs to appear in NEET to get admission in these course.
As per the current data, there are approximately more than 300 dental colleges in India which means in a total there are around 26000 seats in both government as well as private colleges. The average course fee ranges between INR 1-7 lacs.

JOB / SCOPE
It is necessary for the students to register themselves in the Dental Council of India which regulates the BDS course so that they become eligible to practise their profession after the completion of their degree.
The professionals of the course can find lucrative job opportunities as Dentists, Lecturer, Dental Research Scientist, at reputed hospitals and even in the education sectors. The average initial salary of these professionals ranges within INR 4-12lacs per annum.
Apart from the job prospects, students can also opt for further studies after BDS, such as MDS (Master of Dental Surgery).
During the period of a paid internship, the students may earn up to INR 15000-40000 which increases with the increased expertise and experience.
Students can even practise their skills in countries like the US and Canada to earn an increased income compared to what they get in India. However, for this they need to clear exams like NBDE or NDEB.
