My vlog is related to oxygen requirements in general microbiology and a very thank you to all to encourage my vlog. oxygen requirements in general microbiology. In the electron transport chains, the oxygen is used as the final hydrogen acceptor & hence oxygen is essential for living organisms.some bacteria may produce toxic end product. They are hydrogen peroxide which can be detoxified by an enzyme called catalase and free radicals superoxide that is detoxified by the enzyme superoxide dismutase.

The O2 requirement varies with different bacteria and based on that bacteria are classified in the following subheads.

Obligate aerobes

Some bacteria require oxygen for their survival. They are called obligate aerobes.Example of obligate aerobe is mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Facultative anaerobes

Some bacteria can live in the presence or absence of oxygen. They are called facultative anaerobes.when oxygen is available, they undergo aerobics pathway of respiration for the production of ATP.however if the oxygen is unavailable they will switch to fermentation pathway to produce ATP.Example of facultative anaerobe is Eschershia coli.

Obligate anaerobe

These bacteria lack all the detoxification enzyme of the aerobic respiration. In obligate anaerobe clostridium species is an example

Microaerophilic bacteria

These bacteria grow best at low tension e.g. campylobacter spp., Helicobacter spp.

The bacteria that grows Better at high CO2 concentration are called capnophiles.

Temperature requirements

The bacteria vary in their temperature requirements. Each bacterium has its temperature range for its growth.Any temperature above or below the optimal temperature range will inhibit the growth of bacteria. The temperature at which bacteria can grow well is called optimum temperature. Most pathogenic bacteria have optimum temperature of 37°C.

The bacteria are classified based on their temperature range need for their growth:

Mesophilic bacteria

They grow well at the temparature range of 25-40°C,e.g. Eschershia coli.

Psychrophilic bacteria: They grow best at the temparature below 20°C,e.g.Soil saphrophytes.

Thermophilic bacteria:They are best grown at the temparature of 55-80°C,e.g.Bacillus stearothermophilus.

Flagella are long filamentous appendages meant for the bacterial Motility. They consist of a filament, hook and basal body.

Pili are short hair like appendages used mainly for the attachment to the host surface.
