A film that's neither entertaining nor has anything to say. The cinematic equivalent of a teenager having a hormonal temper tantrum. Ran Vijay(Ranbir kapoor) is a rich Delhi brat who grows up idolizing his father, industrialist Balbir Singh (Anil kapoor). Balbir is stern and emotionally unavailable, which messes up Ran Vijay's circuity from childhood. he ran out away from school for his dad's birthday. years later, when his own brother in law addresses Balbir as papa, he gets angry and territorial. family terms annoy him in a general sense too- for instance, his childhood crush Geetanjaali( Rashmika Mandanna) calling him bhaiya publicly. now a frown man, with a bike and bun mullet, he commands Geetanjaali to break off her engagement with another dude ad marry him instead . its unexpected why Geetanjaali responds so fast .
Ran Vijay who as you probably surmised from the trailer has everything money can buy, expect his father's love ad attention. never mind his poor mom enabling his bad behavior, all Vijay wants is to be able to spend his father Balbir's birthdays with him, again mother, very much alive and standing around looking sad, is inconsequential. denied this love, Vijay slowly turns into an animal with incontrollable instinct, acting upon every single intrusive thought in his man brain. also because Balbir is the richest or one of the richest men in India, nothing Vijay does, including straight up mass murder, has any legal consequences, law enforcement doesn't exist in Balbir and Vijay's world.
pop culture has often glorified bad boys. there is always something attractive about people who refuse to toe the line. vaga takes this romanization a bit too far. even as his take on women and violence unsettle you immensely as a viewer, those are his preferences for a protagonist as a director, and he is free to have them. the bigger issue is the lack of purpose in the story. his gun wielding angry young man comes across as a rebel without a cause.
the action feels like an interruption but has bee shot well. Ranbir bobby fight sequence exudes and the intensity of Troy's iconic hector achilleas hand to hand combat scene. the background score and music work well with the mood of the film.
Animal relies heavily on Ranbir Kapoor's talent and stardom. his raw sex appeal and unmatched intensity are the film's highlights. one of the finest actors of this generation, you find yourself trapped in his troubled mind as his blood soaked eyes se the with rage. uninhibited, his ability to become the character he plays, shocks, stuns and draws you in each frame.
More than him being physically naked in that one scene, he was emotionally naked throughout the film in his performance which takes more strength of mind than just being physically naked.
