Do you have an aquarium? Then you should definitely read this article. Fishes present in the aquarium, produce nitrate and ammonia as waste materials inside the aquarium. These waste products are very toxic in nature. If they are not removed from the water, they can kill the fishes also. Ammonia is also known as the β€œInvisible Killer” of the aquarium. The acceptable level of ammonia in the aquarium is zero.

 What causes high ammonia levels?

  • Too many fish – overstocked
  • Overfeeding
  • Weak filtration
  • No nitrifying bacteria in your filter
  • Not performing regular maintenance.

Here is the most easiest and inexpensive way for you to remove those toxic materials from the aquarium a money plant and cut it at a 45 degree angle at the end. Then put its end part (around 5-6cm) in the water and rest part on the top of the aquarium (not in the water). These plants will absorb the toxic materials from the water and make the water clean to respire and live healthy for the fishes.

You can use Lucky bamboo plants also for the same purpose.

There are also other options available in the market for this. You can buy ammonia and nitrate remover chemicals, which are quite expensive.

As per your convenience, you can switch to any one of the above mentioned options.

Other things to be considered:

  1. Change the water regularly
  2. Use ammonia removing filters
  3. Apply water conditioners
  4. Use cycled filters in the aquarium
  5. Perform regular maintenance of the aquarium
  6. Don't overfeed the fishes ensuring your fish don’t go hungry. Any uneaten food will begin to rot and as it breaks down it will release ammonia. So, take your time and figure out how much food your fish need. The right amount of food entirely depends on the  type of the food and the species of fish you keep in your tank.

7.Maintain a particular number            of fishes inside the aquarium.             Don't keep a lot of fishes in a               single aquarium. Overstocking your fish tank can lead to ammonia problems. Too many fish eating and pooping in a tank that is too small can quickly lead to an ammonia spike.

Keeping too many fish is a particular problem among beginners who do not know better.

If you are still deciding which fish to keep in your tank, speak to someone experienced. There are numerous online forums where experts happily advise on suitable fish for your aquarium.
