Pollution is a worldwide issue. Despite the fact that metropolitan region are typically more polluted than  rural areas, pollution can migrate to isolated areas where no one lives. Pesticides and other pollutants, for example, have been identified in antarctic ice sheet. The great pacific garbage patch sheet is a massive concentration of microscopic plastic particles in the middle of the northern pacific ocean.

Pollution is carried by air and water current. Marine contaminants are carried far and wide by ocean currents and migrating fish. Winds can pick up radioactive material that has been released accidently from nuclear plant and disperse it all over the planet. The smoke from one country's industrial spread into another. 

Almost the entire world's population (99 percent) breathes air that violates WHO air quality, posing a health risk. People in low and middle income countries are exposed to highest levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. A record number of over 6000 cities in 117 countries are now monitoring air quality, but residents are still breathing unhealthy levels of fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide.

The findings have encouraged the world heath organization to emphasise the need of reducing air pollution levels by reducing fossil fuel use and implementing other concrete initiatives.

Governments can take variety of actions to improve air quality and public health. Several governments are taking initiatives to improve air quality, WHO is urging rapid ramp-up of efforts to:

• Amend or adopt national air quality standards and put them into effect in accordance with the most recent  WHO air quality guidelines.
• Monitor air quality and identify pollution sources.
• Support the switch to 100 percent clean energy for cooking, heating and lighting in the home.
• Construct secure and cheap public transportation system, as well as pedestrian and bicycle-friendly networks.
• Stricter vehicle emission and efficiency standards, as well as mandatory vehicle inspection and maintenance.
• Invest in energy efficient housing and power generation.
• Improve industry and municiple waste management and reduce agricultural waste incineration, forest fire and certain agro forestry activities.
