Solar Eclipse: Why Are We Still Superstitious ?

Hey there ! Today, I am gonna tell you a story which was about 500 years ago. Kurukshetra was a major pilgrimage centre. Once there was a huge fair on the day of a solar eclipse or commonly known as Surya Grahan. Guru Nanak ji and his friend had gone to the fair. Back then the belief that during a solar eclipse people shouldn't eat was quite prevalent. While Guru Nanak was at the fair he was offered dear meat to eat. Since he did not discriminate between any kind of food so he accepted the offer and this meat was being roasted to eat but when the other revelers in the fair saw someone cooking during a solar eclipse, not even normal food but meat, some people were very offended and they started threatening him and his friends . Guess what happened next ?

The superstitions are still very common even to this day, no matter how much you call yourself  a modern guy. Especially when some conman starts speaking in English that “you shouldn't eat on solar eclipse day ,it is not good for you  ” ,you become blindfolded & trust them. There are many forms of superstitions. Some say they should not eat , go out or  even pray during an eclipse,  sleep , start anything new, etc. People around the globe witnessed a solar eclipse yesterday, we need to understand this event scientifically to end the superstitions around it. It happens when the moon shadow fall somewhere on the surface of the earth. We all know the basic reason of the solar and lunar eclipses  we read in our science books.
Getting back to the story that I started : Some people were threatening  Guru Nanak to kill them when he had meat during eclipse. So when they went to him, Guru Nanak told them that the eclipse is  simply a celestial phenomena that happened because of the shadows of the Earth and the moon.  He further said that the mob can kill him if they want to  but if they consider it wrong to kill an animal and now mob that was about to kill a human,  shouldn't this be a much bigger crime? This calmed the mob a bit. This lights to a debate between Guru Nanak and a conservative man. This is where He composed his famous poem "maas maas kar murakh jhagade" found in the Guru Granth Sahib. This poem is still very relevant today. Surprisingly 1000s of years ago Nanak and Aryabhatta explained this, after that NASA took humans to the moon. Even so today in 2022 people make up and believe these superstitions. Even media is publishing such foolish articles saying that these solar eclipse are dangerous events , you should check your horoscope, you may get hurt or stressed. Apart from these predictions some people believe that one shouldn't go out during an eclipse, they claim that pregnant women shouldn't go out, apparently there are some harmful radiations emitted by Sun. Now, Tell us how ? Where is the logic ?

Swami Vivekanand said " If a star disturbs my life then it is worthless. you will see that astrology and mystical stuff is a sign of a weak mind. so whenever you start falling for these get checked by a good doctor and  eat good food " . I mean Sun is no personal enemy of anyone. Why would he be interested in ruining someone's life ?
Apart from this, people are actually advised to not to look directly at the sun during  eclipse. This is correct and there is a scientific reason behind this. You can use filters, known as eclipse glasses , telescope, to see the eclipse through them.
Hope now you know the real story behind these phenomena of solar eclipses and you won't be believing in such foolish superstitions anymore.

Thank you for reading this !
