Hi guys, Welcome to my blog. Today I want to share a few information on Journalism.

In the olden days, people used to get news and information through newspapers and radio. Later, Television and newspapers. Now, everything has gone digitalized. Newspaper publishers introduced their apps and e-papers for the benefit of readers.

The information we get from every corner of the world (North, East, West, and South) is called “ NEWS”.  The person who collects the information or facts is called a “Journalist”. The way information, facts, and events are communicated through the audience is called “Journalism”.

History of Journalism:

The origin of Journalism started in the 15th and 16th centuries but the content is limited. In the 19th century, due to the interference of political parties newspapers gained popularity and readers increased drastically. Later in the 1860s and 1870s, most of newspapers contained novels, poetry, ads, etc., Since it is expensive readers used to read them in nearby cafes.

Radio Journalism started in the 1920s and it peaked in the 1930s and 1940s. During the 1950s and 1960s news related to business, culture, finance, and others was informed through television. Online Journalism started after 2000s and it is booming till now.

What is Journalism?

Journalism is a form of communication and it revolves around six questions:

  • What?
  • Who?
  • When?
  • Where?
  • How?
  • Why?

Denis MC Quail defined Journalism as ‘paid writing for public media with reference to actual and going events of public relevance’.

Functions of Journalism:

The main role of journalism is to act as a mediator between the common people and policymakers. It is the people's voice when it comes to corruption, government, and misuse of power. Journalism is like a watchdog in society, it creates awareness and spreads the truth about social and economic changes.

Nine Elements of Journalism:

According to the book, Elements of Journalism by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstell, every journalist should follow the guidelines and fulfill their duty by providing the information people need. The nine elements of journalism are:

  • Journalism's first obligation is truth.
  • Its first loyalty is to the citizens.
  • Its essence is the discipline of verification.
  • Its practitioners must maintain independence from those they cover.
  • It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
  • It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
  • It must strive to make the significant, interesting, and relevant.
  • It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
  • Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.

Styles in Journalism:

These are the few styles in journalism

  • Print Journalism
  • Broadcast Journalism
  • Cyber (Online) Journalism
  • Sports Journalism
  • Science Journalism
  • Investigative Journalism
