It is in a dark age that we are living. The world is in chaos, people restless and the institutions in disarray. Amidst such a horrendous situation, the least one can do for oneself to preserve stability and maintain a healthy mind is to engage in self-care activities. Self-care isn't synonymous to being selfish or being a narcissist. On the contrary, it's a rejuvenating habit to lead a healthy life. Self care isn't objective and it doesn't have a strict order. Anything that can give one happiness and comfort could be self care. It differs from person to person. For some, it might be a dinner at an extravagant hotel with friends and for some, a book, coffee and a cozy bed would do the trick. In short, self-care is spending time for oneself and realising one's own needs and limitations. Self-care has proven to help cope up with anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions that could be harmful to one's life. It isn't easy to develop a self care habit since it initially might make you feel guilty for not working on things that ought to be done. But in the long run, self care will help you to adjust to your working conditions and be more productive and stoic. Work stress, exam stress, existential crisis, anxiety about the future are all things that meddle with our mental health. The toll it takes on your health is beyond calculation. Contrary to physical wounds that are visible, the scars in the mind are invisible to the outside and hence mostly neglected. Since it cannot be seen by others easily, the only person that could recognize and treat it effectively is yourself. The first step to self-care is self love. Don't wait for someone to love you. Take matters into your own hands and work for self development. Self care can be of emotional, mental, physical and spiritual wellness. Emotional self care primarily includes avoiding negative influences. It shouldn't be confused with toxic positivity where one is told to stay positive no matter what without validating normal negative thoughts and apprehensions. To achieve emotional stability: avoid people abusing you, don't be a prey to emotional blackmailing and do things that fulfills you. For mental self care you might prefer journaling, reading and reflecting on yourself. Comprehend and compartmentalize your thoughts, meditate on them and find your inner desires and work for them. Mediation, yoga, counselling could also help to attain mental happiness and peace. The best way to practice physical self care is by performing exercises and maintaining a well balanced diet. As the old saying goes, one reflects what he/she eats. So make sure to eat healthy food at the proper time. Never delay or deny food to compromise on work or studies. Also early morning or evening walks can reduce stress. Spiritual self care might include activities like deep prayer and meditation, not always to God but anything or anyone you are committed to. It can also be achieved by showing and practicing gratitude, being kind, spending time with nature and connecting with your inner mind. The world is now battling a pandemic. But what goes unnoticed is the depression and anxiety disorders pandemic sweeping almost all the households. People have lost jobs, students, their regular education and labourers and daily workers, their only income. It isn't easy to remain calm and pleasant in such a situation. Even watching the news for a long time could make you feel emotionally exhausted. The best and effective way to overcome all these is self care. Make a call to your best friend, read a book that you had kept aside to prioritize work, watch films to get lost in the characters and stories , prepare your favourite food and relish it, find engaging songs and relax, also memes and trolls could help to elevate your mood. I personally have found these practices really effective. People with childhood trauma, abusive parents and households, with severe insecurities and emotional instabilities, who cannot connect to themselves as a result must definitely seek medical care to make life smoother. They ought to indulge in self care activities as per the physician's instructions. Each life is different and each person's lifestyle and surroundings are different. You needn't have to feel guilty about spending time for yourself. Remember and realize that you are worth love and attention and it's primarily your own duty to take care of yourself.
