I am sure you all have heard stories of Pichal Peri from your grandma and wanted to see one. When we were kids, we heard stories from elders about Chudail and Dayan (witches), which made us scared and taught us to be well-behaved. But once we grew up, we got to know those are just made-up superstitious stories to scare out the kids and make kids not act out of it or just obey elders. Irrespective of the reasons, stories of Pichal Peri or Chudail are famous everywhere. You can find stories about them in every culture with a different name moreover, the story of their origin is almost the same, which mainly rotate around abuse by man or by certain people. Today we will know about Indonesian Pichal Peri called Kuntilanak or Pontianak, which is similar to what we know as Chudail.
Kuntilanak or Kunti is a spirit of a wandering woman who died while pregnant or had a tragic death during childbirth. It is said that when a female dies tragically abused by a man or during childbirth, they become a vengeful spirit and bear grudges for certain people, they return from the dead with vengeance, determined to exact revenge and retribution from men. They usually dwell in dark clumps of the banana tree during daytime and once the night falls they start roaming in the succulent area or forest, and whoever came across likely to get killed, and if one is lucky enough to escape, will be left traumatized for a lifetime.
According to legend, they can be seen in a white dress which is soaked in blood, black long hair, and a pale face. In order to exact revenge, Kutilanak transforms into a beautiful young lady and lures men, and once the prey falls into her trap, she reveals her true monstrous form and rip out his internal organs, and eats them up, leaving behind the unforgettable horrific scene. She starts looking for prey once the full moon falls. Dogs start howling if Kuntilanak is near and the smell of floral scent spreads in the air. But if the surrounding become unusually quiet and dogs whine then brace yourself as now she is near. You will notice the stench of the decayed corpse and hear cries of infants or laud woman laughter.
The good news is it is easy to subdue her, all one has to do is drive a long nail fully into the hole at the nape of her neck to stop the Kuntilanak. But this is no easy task as it sounds as she possesses supernatural strength, so it will take many people to pin her down while the nail is driven in. If it's driven successfully, she will turn into a beautiful woman and a good wife and she will continue as it until the nail is embedded. But if the nail is removed, she will rip apart whoever near her. After hearing her origin, I don't know whether she is the vicious spirit or a victim that started fighting back and gone too far.
