Thinking Fast And Slow

I'm currently reading the book “Thinking Fast and Slow - by Daniel Kahneman” . Here are some of the snippets from the book which i found very intersting.

Do you know there are two modes of thinking? The author calls them SYSTEM1( the automatic brain ) and SYSTEM 2 ( the effort brain ) .

SYSTEM 1 - operates automatically and quickly , with little or no effort  and no sense of voluntary control .

SYSTEM 2 - allocates attention to effortfull mental activities that demand it .

Looking at a picture we immediately know that anyone is angry , sad etc . This is your SYSTEM 1 in operation. Similarly when I say what's 2 multiplied by 2 , we instantly know the answer.

Now when i say what's 19 multiplied by 17 ? Here it's not so easy and our brain has to make some effort to come up with the answer. This requires some amount of concentration. This is SYSTEM 2 in operation.

Below example will show which mode of thinking you depend on the most -  SYSTEM 1 or SYSTEM 2 .

All roses are flowers .

Some flowers fade quickly .

Therefore some roses fade quickly.

If you feel that yes , its true that some roses fade quickly then your wrong . It's possible that roses don't fade at all isn't it .

If your SYSTEM 1 overpowers SYSTEM 2 then you think roses do fade , if SYSTEM 2 overpowers SYSTEM 1 then you think other wise .

Both SYSTEM1( the automatic brain ) and SYSTEM2( the effort brain ) have there own advantages . System 1 is quick to respond while system 2 is slow. If you find yourself infront of a tiger you won't wait for system 2 to kick in , you will run as fast as possible . That's system 1 in operation.

Another example all must have experienced. We all can easily think about multiple things when we take a walk . Now if we increase speed and keep jogging thinking about other things gets a bit difficult. Now if i tell you to solve a multiplication problem let's says 78 multiplied by 29 while running most of us will definitely stop running and if possible sit somewhere and try to solve it. Thus system 2 operation requires concentration , significant amount of attention to work . While system 1 generally is intuitive and automatic.

In our routine life it's SYSTEM1 that takes over .

As i go through the book will share more interesting ideas.
