When I was in school it used to be so predictable, after the summer vacation, school used to start in mid June . By that time rains would have started. June used to be the month of first showers. The smell of Earth when the first water droplets hit the ground was something to cherish. Rains used to continue till September end.
October used to be the month of October heat. Some showers would still be around .
By the beginning of November winter would have just made an entry . The next four months used to be pure winter .
March would mean the advent of summer . This generally used to be exam time , sky would be complete blue with small white clouds scattered here and there .
The next three months would be summer with no signs of any moisture. Mornings and evenings would be busy playing outside while afternoons were meant for indoor games and mango juices.
Things were simple and predictable. Weather was predictable. Everyone knew and planned accordingly. Rains would arrive and go in rainy season . Winters were meant for cold weather and summers reserved for hot sun .
But now it's raining in May! What has happened? We cannot predict any more. Gone are the days when you knew when rains would arrive. Now a days it doesn't matter which month of the year it is there might be hailstorms , strong winds and rainfall.
Most hit by this unpredictable weather are the farmers. It doesn't rain when the crops require rainfall and when they don't, it rains .
But why is this happening? What has changed so much in last few years ? Is it the result of global warming ? Wasn't global warming meant for text books ?
We as humans need to sit back , relax and think about it . It seems we are so busy ourselves that no one is giving attention to it. What does a daily labourer who is working hard for his next meal got to do with global warming? Similarly a software engineer busy in coding and trying to get bonuses each month why would he think about it? Even we as individuals are so busy in our routine life we hardly think about climate change. There is no point of progress if it's not sustainable.
Covid is teaching us so many things albeit at a very high cost. The biggest lesson it's teaching us is to cooperate. It's teaching us the importance of being together, coordinating with each other. Believing not only in yourself but also the person next to you.
It's teaching us to act in unison. May be it's preparing us for the future.
Climate change is going to be much deadly than covid. We will have entire coast lines submerged in water. Entire small islands being wiped out. These unpredictable showers are telling us something. We need to hear them.
Sometimes I feel we are behaving like the horse on the cart who has blinkers on. He cannot see sideways just ahead. Let's start with our ownself . As a great man once said “ Be the change you want to see in the world " .
