Future -Ed

It's the evening of 2nd of May 2021 , and I'm enjoying watching IPL. Between every over bold there is an add EDtech on TV either Byju's or Whitehat junior.

I really would be amazed seeing a small kid code on a computer just as in the add of whitehat junior. And many are. The first time I was introduced to coding was in 2nd year engineering when I was 19 years old. It was just 13 years ago and now we see not 19 but 9 years old kids doing coding .

The future of education is here or is it. Do you think these kids being taught coding right now will serve them for their entire lives ? Do we really think the latest coding languages of today will still exist just 10years from now ?

In the book " 21 Lessons for 21st Century " the author Yuvah Noah Harari discusses this same issue . According to him we really dont know what to teach  kids today . Which computer language will be relevant in 2050 no one knows. Whether coding itself will be relevant we don't know . May be artificial intelligence will develop in such a manner where all codes are written by AI. Not only codes,  may be AI is developed so much that major decisions of a human life will be taken by AI. Not because the human is incapable of taking decisions but because decisions taken by AI are much better .

So what should we teach kids ? The only thing we can say we ceratinity is that there will be frequent changes . The only thing permanent is change . What we need to teach kids is this . The ability to reinvent onself . The ability to change . In future there will be no jobs for life . There might not be jobs for a decade . Change will be so frequent that kids will have to reinvent themselves again and again . And this will not be true for kids alone , even adults .

There will be situations where every decade we will have a new job . In schools today there is no need to bombard kids with information . They already have too much information at their disposable courtesy the Internet . What is required to ingrain in them qualities of adaptability, ability to reinvent onself and most importantly to be curious , to learn new things .

When I was born we had very few telephones in the whole city . When I was 10 years old we had telephone in our house . When is was 20 I had a mobile in my hand .Now that I'm 30 my regular mobile is now a smartphone able to do things that were difficult for a  computer few years ago. When I will be 40 may be mobiles will reduce in size . By the time I'm 50 maybe these mobiles will be converted into chips . And by the time I'm 60 may be we will have mobile chips in our bodies .

We don't know what the future has in store for us . The only things we can be sure about is Change.

Teach kids to reinvent themselves, teach them adaptability and teach them to be curious.
