We all know that May 1st is Labors day. But, how many of us know that Chennai is the main cause for celebrating MAY day. Not only in one place, but the event that happened in two places in Chennai is also the reason for celebrating MAY day. Come let's see the history of MAY day!!

It was the time when laborers from various countries in the world were forced to work for 15 - 18 hours a day. Especially, the Charter Movement that took place in England was famous. Same as that, the labor strike that happened in Australia kept 8 hours of work as their request.

In the Meeting of the International Labor Parliament, which was held on July 14th, 1889 in Paris, the strike for 8 hours of work will be taken forward and May 1st  should be declared a MAY day were given as a challenge. Only as a result of this challenge, every year May 1st is celebrated as Labors day.

WHEN WAS LABORS DAY CELEBRATED IN INDIA AND WHO IS THE REASON FOR THAT???

In the month of July 1922, the laborers from Madras Aluminium Factory declared the strike. This strike was guided by SINGARAVELAR. Singaravelar is a communism thinker and a Congressist. Even before this, he used to conduct labor meetings on the beach that is near the Chennai High Court. As a result of this, in 1922 of August, the British India Police made a ride in Singaravelar's house.

In this situation, in the Congress meeting held in the same year, Singaravelar said, “The Congress Party should show more attention to the well-being of labors and also the Congress Party should take necessary action to resolve the requests placed by the labors."

INDIA'S FIRST MAY DAY:

Singaravelar decided that MAY day should be celebrated in India in the year 1923. Even before that in the year 1923 April 26th, he sent a mail to Swami Dheenath, a member of the AITUC group stating "Since MAY day is celebrated all over the world, India should also celebrate Labors day. In the continuity of this, he decided to celebrate MAY day in Chennai.

The meeting was held by Singaravelar, on the beach (today's Marina), which is near the Chennai High Court. He declared a new party which is named as “Labor and Kissan Party” and he gave detailed information about the newly formed party. Moreover, he confirmed that “The Labor and Kissan Party will function as a branch of the Congress."

At the same time, in the Thiruvaanmaiyur meeting, in the presence of M.P.S. Velayudham, the Secretary of Labor and Kissan Party, Subramania Shiva, and all the other leaders gave their speeches and India's MAY day was celebrated.

After this, MAY day was celebrated in India continuously.
