We have often heard of several superstitions from time to time in our lives. Accept it or not but almost everyone is superstitious to some extent. Isn't it? Being an Indian, I am also a bit superstitious.

Not only in India but worldwide, many superstitions are considered even today. But how many of us know the scientific reason behind these superstitions? Here, I am going to discuss some of them as well as science behind them.

Eating curd and sugar brings good fortune

Logic : Curd has cooling and refreshing effect and soothes the body while sugar is a great source of glucose which provides instant energy. That's why it is said to eat curd and sugar before exam or before starting a new work.

Hanging lemon and chilli at doorstep protects from evil eye

Logic : Lemon and chilli both have insecticidal properties and works as an insect repellent and natural pesticide. It keeps harmful insects and pests away so it is recommended to hang at the entrance of house or shops.

Bath after attending funeral

Logic : Dead bodies may release some infection causing microorganisms. As to prevent the body from infections, it is advised to take bath after attending last ritual rites.

Throwing coins in water bodies supposed to fullfill wishes and bring good luck

Logic : This old belief was started when copper coins were used and rivers were the only water source. Copper has antimicrobial properties that kills infection causing harmful microorganisms present in the rivers. It also has detoxifying properties. So this practice was done to make water pure and fit for drinking.

Avoid sweeping and cutting nails post sunset

Logic : This belief was started when there was no provision of lamp and electricity. Sweeping might be difficult in absence of light and thus, it was not advised to sweep after sunset. Likewise, cutting nails was avoided to prevent injury in absence of light.

Don't be around peepal tree during night time

Logic : During night time, peepal tree releases carbondioxide in large amount. It may affect the health negatively that's why, it is believed not to go around peepal tree at night.

Avoid eating meat on particular weekdays ( like tuesday and saturday)

Logic : This idea of adopting habit of some meat free days in a week is to cleanse and detoxify the body. It's mainly for those who are pure non-vegetarians.

Apart from these, there are many more superstitions behind which there is science while some have nothing to do with reality but still people follow them. It is often observed that various superstitions associated with religion and culture are made tradition, which is not right. Being religious is ok but being superstitious without any logic is nothing but stupidity.

Try to figure out the truth behind any superstition before acknowledging and believing it.
