Hey there! Hope you all are doing well. You all seen the title, right? It's a book review of The Lowland written by Jhumpa Lahiri. I hope you'll find it interesting after reading it. So here it is:

Subhash & Udayan Mitra are brothers with a profoundly entangled childhood, their lives in the Calcutta of 1950s too impossible of being imagined without mentioning the other. They have been inseparable since birth, in moments of harmless mischief and solemn goodboy-ness alike, always found together, breaking into golf clubs, smoking in secret. But as they come to age, their priorities begin tending to different directions. While Subhash wants to pursue his education in the States, Udayan chooses to stay back at home and discreetly participate in the uprising CPI (ML) movement, only wishing to serve justice where its due. Soon Subhash moves to Rhode Island and Udayan finds himself in the midst of Naxalite activities, seemingly unaware of the unfixable menace he's gotten himself so closely into. Now they communicate only through inconsistent letters, sometimes half-read, sometimes disposed, torn apart. What follows is a massive tragedy that would upturn their lives forever, the lowland in question playing a pivotal role in it all . Jhumpa's storytelling, immersive and captivating as usual, held my attention from the first word to the last, though pervasively gloomy with the intention of stirring a meek but indelible sense of sorrow into the reader. The characters - Gauri, Bela, Mr. & Mrs. Mitra - all took shape with a pacing slowness, patiently shedding their skin as they geared the story forward.

To put it very simply, The Lowland broke my heart. There wasn't any manic sobbing, but every now & then it required me to pause and reflect on the bombs that kept blowing in the middle of its pages. But to read about my own city from another time felt joyful somehow, although there's nothing even remotely happy about this book. The story took itself to neighbourhoods that are literally a walk away from where I was reading it, and even though terrible things kept happening there, it filled me with a strange feeling of gratification . How weird. The Lowland was longlisted for the @thebookerprizes in 2013. Another reason why you should definitely read it. // No leaves were unnecessarily killed in the making of this picture, only those that needed trimming anyway.

Thank you for reading and supporting. Have a nice day ahead!
