As a dermatologist I felt its my social responsibility to reach out to the people and help them about the common misconception they have about the skin
Skin is the largest visible organ we know of and of course largest internal organ being liver
So we have to take care of our largest organ so here are a few myths busted
1.Applying turmeric brightens you up:
Definitely not,it gives you a jaundiced look which is aesthetically non-appealing and tumeric is a photosensitivity triggering drug thus when you apply tumeric for a longer period and expose yourself to the sun you wil be tanned.
2.Tanning isn't good: A BIG NOO!! Tanning is good for the skin because it's protecting you from the sun forming a shield and people who ran are not at risk acquiring skin cancers. But again it takes time for the tan to completely resolve
3.Consuming milk/kesar makes you fair :
The one and only drug when taken orally makes you bright (not fair) is glutathione or any antioxidants(vitA,vitC,vitE).And studies says then consumption of milk and milk products puts you at risk for acne so beware…
4.Shaving makes your hair grow thicker and longer:
The thickness of hair depends on the size of the hair bulb and the hormonal action on the androgen receptors and not any external factors. Thus shaving causes growth of the hair shaft from the root which appears to be thick. So instead of shaving , epilation or waxing ; laser hair reduction is the best method of hair removal especially in cases of keratosis pilaris( a condition where keratin plugs accumulate at the opening of the hair follicle)
5.Dandruff spreads from one another:
Dandruff is a layman word which is medically termed as seborrheic dermatitis, it is a scaly dermatitis which affects hair bearing areas such as scalp, beard, eyelashes and also seborrheic areas of skin such as face and upper back.It occurs due to an internal cause and is not contagious and usually has a recurrent course. Also associated with other conditions such as pityriasis versicolor characterized by faint white patches and acne(pimple). Thus maintaining cleanliness and simple treatment for the condition suffices.
6.Oiling hair makes it grow:
This is one of the myths hard to be busted as applying oil is a compulsive part of some festivities. But as hard as it is though true that oil only attracts more dust particles and causes more damage to the hair root and also the shaft. The logic behind this is the scalp produces the required. So no external oil is required.
