"Your Name" Movie Review: A Visually Stunning Masterpiece.

When it comes to Studio Ghibli's calibre of work, Kimi no Nawa is right up there. It's a voyage into a universe teeming with mystique, atmosphere, and breathtaking scenery. a voyage about development and fortitude in the face of insurmountable obstacles. A voyage across space and time that explores human emotion, as we follow our two protagonists as they valiantly fight against fate. One of the most engaging anime movie experiences I've had in a long time is this adventure.

There has been much discussion about this movie for a valid reason - Makoto Shinkai, with his rich visual style, has been creating anime for more than twenty years. The breathtaking views of Tokyo and Hida showcased in the film are truly impressive. The characters, particularly in the Hida segment, exude a sense of warmth that adds authenticity to the film's slice-of-life narrative.

The plot of Your Name revolves around two major characters, Mitsuha Miyamizu and Taki Tachibana. Mitsuha is dissatisfied with her existence in the Hida countryside with all kinds of shrine-related chores and wishes to live in Tokyo.

The town holds a significant role in the relationship between Taki and Mitsuha, highlighting the love they share. The film's inspiration is drawn from the 12th-century Japanese story, Torikaebaya Monogatari, featuring siblings exhibiting behaviors of the opposite sex, which is evident in the body-swapping concept of the film.

Mitsuha appears to have switched places with Taki, a youngster from Tokyo, while dreaming, and their lives now intersect. Each party attempts to advise the other on how to best handle the situation by leaving messages for one another.

However, the conclusion is mutually beneficial: Mitsuha helps Taki with his love life, while Taki makes Mitsuha more assertive with her peers and the inhabitants of her hamlet. This desire is then seemingly expressed in a hallucinatory manner, and the next day Mitsuha has no recollection of acting strangely and tomboyishly.

I still believe that this film's failure to receive an Academy Award nomination is a major injustice, but I understand why. This is not to suggest that I agree with its absence, but from a cultural sense, Your Name is deeply embedded in Japanese society in ways that are likely beyond the parochial perspective of those in Hollywood.

In conclusion, Your Name is an exceedingly good film that offers a nice, subtle story with highly likeable people while also being visually lovely throughout. Like many others, I'm excited to see what Shinkai comes up with next.
