Let us talk about something important ,today . Important for our career. Actually , there are many important aspects when it comes to our career building . But, today I am going to talk about one that is actually not that tough to crack but many people out there , fear of this . And not performing well in this leads to diminish their confidence and spirit. And it is possible that you also belong to this group of people .
Okay so I am talking about the term “ Group discussion’’ . Everybody must have faced this group discussion thing in their life once or twice. Be it during interviews for any job/admission in colleges , be it In classroom , or among friends and relatives . So, what actually happens in a group discussion . A group of four to five or more people will be there and they will be given a random topic and they need to share their individual opinion on the topic . See, it sounds so simple right?
If you are a part of any GD , then you only need to share your thoughts on that topic . What comes to your mind when you think of that topic ? What do you believe the topic is about ? Does that topic give you some positive vibes or negative . Just your individual thought , no one expects you to be an expert on the related topic .
Still there are people who FEAR GROUP DISCUSSION . They try to avoid getting involved in any kind of group discussions . There are many problems behind this fear , like , they feel shy or the lack of knowledge related to the topic etc etc . But , there is one COMMON problem which can be seen in large numbers . And this problem is about speaking in a language other than your native language .
Normally , the topics given to you during GDs are the common and the normal ones . You can talk for hours on those topics , if you would be given the liberty to talk in your native language . But here , you are expected to exchange your opinion , views about the topic , situation , issue among the members of the group in a formal way and in English language ( official language ). It is not that you fear speaking in front of others , it’s just that you are not comfortable with the language on which you are told to speak .
The fear of failure directly comes , when you feel a lack of confidence in expressing yourself . And that is the moment you start getting nervous , you start overthinking and your confidence lowers down . Which results in you ending up losing the chance , that you could have won , just like that.
See the problem lies within you and you can only fight this . Take GDs as just a formal way of conversing and you would do well to crack it . It is your mind that creates the fear of losing and you start thinking -
what worse can happen rather than thinking about what good could happen .
