Goblin is a fantasy love story about a contemporary day goblin (Gong Yoo) who requires a human wife (Kim Go Eun) to terminate his cursed immortal life. Then, a grim reaper (Lee Dong Wook) with no memory of his past enters into his life. However, the goblin unexpectedly decides he wants to live and be with his bride when he finally finds her. The most enjoyable ever Korean dramas. Guardian (also referred to as Goblin) is a beautiful adventure from start to finish and a must-watch for fantasy aficionados. It has amazing cinematography, sizzling chemistry between its primary cast, and one of the best soundtracks in this genre. The Goryeo Dynasty general Kim Shin (Gong Yoo) is the subject of Guardian. To defend King Wang Yeo (Kim Min Jae of The Producers), he murdered many of the kingdom's adversaries. Shin's sister Kim Sun (Kim So Hyun from The Last Princess, Love Alarm, and Love Alarm 2) was the king's wife. The King then gave the order to kill Shin after being manipulated by his uncle Park Joong Heon (Kim Byung Chul from Descendants of the Sun). The people might be more impressed with a victorious general than a king who has never engaged in combat, which is why the King was persuaded to believe that Shin was a threat to his throne. Shin was transformed into an immortal goblin/guardian as retribution for his sins. Guardian whose bride must remove the sword lodged in his chest before he can pass on to the next life. The major part of the drama takes place 900+ years later, when Shin finally meets Ji Eun Tak (Kim Go Eun), his bride. The narrative shows us how Shin and Eun Tak adjust to their new positions in life and the struggles they experience when forced to decide between cohabiting while always at risk of dying and choosing to live apart in safety.
How I would describe this relationship in Goblin is that it is one hell of a love story. Its funny, cute, but heartbreaking all at the same time. Poor Grim Reaper looked like a lost innocent puppy when it came to Sunny asking him questions about himself. There love story is so well woven and heart-wrenching to watch play out on screen especially when you learn of there past lives and how they have truly struggled to have there happy ending. SPOILER: I absolutely cried my eyes out when Sunny and Reaper went through the door of tea room together, and then seeing them finally have there happy ending in the next life, like I said one hell of a love story indeed. This relationship in Goblin is one heck of a love story, is how I would sum it up. It's both adorable and heartbreaking while also being humorous.
Deok Hwa must be mentioned since, despite having a minor role in this drama, he had a pleasant presence and an impression. He undoubtedly added humorous moments to the situation, and all he ever wished for was his grandfather to give him his credit card back. It's intriguing to consider how he might have evolved and assisted Kim Shin given that he also comes from a family line that has assisted Kim Shin/Goblin across the decades.
We had romance, but we also had the legendary bromance of this drama between Reaper and Goblin. The two's camaraderie is what makes Goblin such a unique television series. There was never a dull moment with these two, from the time of their introduction to the time they parted ways. They made a great slow motion stroll to rescue Eun Tak from her captors, and I don't think I'll ever forget that moment. Both of them, however, had terrible futures to face: Reaper failed to connect with a mortal since Grim Reapers lack past memories or names, and Goblin was now going to die because he met Eun Tak, his bride. All in all the bromance really does steal the show. For me, the conclusion was a bittersweet one. Yes, it was joyful to see them all again. But it had been a difficult journey to get there.
The number of times the OST for Crush's song Beautiful Life had me sit there sobbing and clutch my heart. The drama's soundtrack blends in flawlessly and amplifies all the emotions you are experiencing while watching a particular scene. For instance, Ailee's song I Will Go To You Like The First Snow perfectly captures Kim Shin's emotions. I could not stop admiring the breathtaking scenery, the varied camera angles, and the overall attention to detail in the drama's cinematography. The photographs below really speak for themselves, so I can only imagine how much time and work they expended to produce such a visually stunning scenario.
The story was unique in general. I found it impressive that the show was able to develop a compelling plot despite the supernatural elements it had to include. It's worth watching!
