In the era of digitalisation where everything is going digital be it money or other things digitalisation of education is also one of the kind and with the arrival of covid-19 focus on digitalisation has also increased and with this many started teaching for free by posting videos on social media platforms one such is videos teaching mathematics tricks.
first I watched just to know the tricks but then a sudden thought came into my mind and that was do we really need these tricks ? or does it makes maths easy ? with my knowledge (can say limited) of pedagogy of mathematics I found it to be not necessary and a thing which makes mathematics more complicated as well as illogical .
as we all are aware of the fact that if there is anything most of the students are scared of is mathematics . why is it so ? for this to answer we need to know the nature of mathematics which is very difficult to explain in short but if it is to write then I would say that it is a collection of logical concept and changes from concrete to abstract as we go higher up and here lies the problem .
The major reason of fear of mathematics is firstly ,it is taught as if it is something which is of no use in daily life especially starting from elementary mathematics where concepts such as Algebra , Ratio are introduced secondly, it has so many rules which seems something to learn but NO! you don't need to learn them like learning .all you need is logical reason to solve.
but what I have seen is that most of the teachers never teach students explaining proper logical reason and when asked the reason by students they say it is meant to be solved like that .and when students curiosity remains unanswered they get anxious and loose the interest and on top of that teachers tells students tricks to solve question which becomes more of a burden as they already have lots to remember (formulas ).
according if you really want children to know the tricks let them found it themselves while solving sums with logical reasoning .I still remember finding a short way to solve addition of whole number and a fraction . The happiness and proud feeling i felt at that time was unimaginable .i felt as if i have mastered the subject though maths was already one of my favourite subject it became more precious and important to me.
