Everyday Sexism And Misogyny- Part 2 Rape Culture

Definition- Because of course, our school curriculum teaches us limited stuff, and teaching about societal issues is less important than cursive writing!

Rape culture is a sociological theory of a setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality.

Some people argue rape culture doesn't exist. To them, I would like to say, Open Your Eyes.

It's difficult to break this stone!

Rape has become so “usual”, that now it is treated as the norm, and victims are blamed for their own assaults. Rape culture isn't just about sexual violence, it is about the norms and institutions that protect rapists, promote impunity, shame victims, and demand women to be on their guard 24/7.

“Rape is about violence, not sex. If a person hits you with a spade you wouldn't call it gardening.”

If people understand this, there will be a lot less victim-blaming. Because “It appears you have a reputation for enjoying gardening, are you sure you really didn't want him to hit you with that spade?” doesn't make any sense!

Our “society” doesn't view women as humans. Women have always been seen as “someone's daughter/sister/wife/mother” as if women don't have an identity of their own! The disrespect of a woman is seen as the disrespect of the whole family/community. And this is exactly why so many rape cases are not reported in India because “What will the society say?”, or “Think so the family's image!”
Stop encouraging the idea that rape is wrong because she is someone's sister/mother/daughter/wife. Rape is wrong because she is someone.

Proof that Rape Culture exists-

Strength of barriers to reporting rape. - Maps on the Web
Strength of Barriers to Reporting Rape (2015)
Deep Green- Virtually no barriers
Light Green- Some cultural barriers
Yellow- Cultural barriers regularly keep women from reporting rape
Orange- Cultural barriers to reporting rape are intense, but a woman is not at risk of possible physical duress if she does not report the rape
Red- Cultural norms on reporting are severe and the woman may face punishment even if innocent.
  1. Take a good look at how zero countries are deep green and tell me rape culture doesn't exist!

  2. Take a good look at how most of the world is red and orange and tell me rape culture doesn't exist!

  3. Take a good look at how India is deep red and tell me rape culture doesn't exist!
Why I didn't report
“Why now after so many years?”
“I don't believe you!"
“What were you wearing?”
“Were you drunk or high?”
“That's what boys do!”
“He would never do something like that!”
“Did you scream?”
“Did you provoke him?”

Rape Culture tells “beautiful” women that they should  EXPECT to be harassed/abused, while “ugly” women should be HAPPY for the “attention”.

Rape Culture is victim shaming a woman for being “too drunk”, then defending a man by saying his actions were influenced by alcohol.

Yes, it exists!

“But it's been so long, why do you want to report it now?”

Let's get one thing straight,
If they were raped 5 mins ago, they were raped.
If they were raped 2 weeks ago, they were raped.
If they were raped 30 years ago, They. Were. Raped.
Time does not magically erase the event. They can come forward whenever they are ready!

 Women feel trapped.

“Who can be raped?”

Literally any person! No matter what their gender, sex, age, religion, caste, etc. is, if they are a human, they can be raped.
By definition, rape is performed “against a person's will”, but apparently some humans have forgotten how to be human because-

This happened in march 2021.
While Mumbai is generally touted as one of the safer cities for human beings to live in, unfortunately, if the recent incidents are to be accounted for, the same cannot be said for animals, especially dogs.

Note: I want men to understand that when women are talking about feminism and rape culture, it's not just a political conversation, it's not about being a “social justice warrior” or something. It's about our actual lives being shaped by misogyny since childhood and the daily reality of living in fear of violence. This isn't a philosophical debate. This is our life!
