KATHAK

- Originated from the nomadic dancers called  

KATHAKARSand got converted into a stylysed dance by  

the patronage of Mughals from AKBAR’S reign.

- Mixing of HINDU and ISLAMIC cultures.

- Only classical dance in india associated with  

Hindustani music.

- Instruments likePakhawaj, Tabla, Sarangi, Sitar,  

Harmonium, Flute, Sarod, etc. are used.

- Greatest Patron ; NawabWajid Ali Shah of Awadh

o He developed the LucknowGharana.

- The King of Raigarh Raja Chakradhar Singh who  

himself was a Kathak dancer gave birth to  

RaigarhGharana of Kathak—greatest contribution to  

Kathak.

- Pirouttes ;one foot spinning .

- Recittion by the dancer ; PADHANT

- Dancer address the audience ; SALAAM

- Similar to the flamengo Dance of the Gypsies.

- Mainly based on Stories of Ramayan, Mahabharat, andMangalacharan ; offering to god

o Bathu ; dedication to Lord BathukeswarBhairav  

(Lord Shiva).

o Moksha ; final part  

- Based on Mahabharata , Ramayana  

- Theme ; lyrics and all adopted from Jayadev’s Gita

KUCHIPUDI

- Originated fromKuchelapuram VillageKrishna  

DistricAndhrapradesh.

- Originally a part of Dance Dramaie.,NatyaMela.

- Modern style of kuchipudi dance was developed by  

Siddentra Yogi in 17th century

o His work ; Bhamkalapam

o Foundation of kuchipudi

- Modern style ;solo dancing was developed by Lakshmi  

Narayana Swami.

- Certain techniques ; dancing on the rim of a brass plate  

with pot full of water on head => called Tarangam.

- Known for Acrobatic Dancing.

- Vachikabhinaya is a feature of this dance ; given by  

character called sutradar.

- Themes ; mythology.

- 2 styles of presentantion ;

o Lokdharni ; costumes & make up

o Natyadaharni ; gestures anSarvangabhinaya ; entire body is used all Manipuri  

dances

- Manipuri dance is based on Pancharas (no navaras).

- Rasleela is compared to Solar system.(Krishna at the  

centre and Gopis rotate around).

- Ankle bells are absent .

b) SANKIRTHANA

- Congregational singing along with Dance(Group  

Dance)

- UNESCO INTANGIBLE HERITAGE LIST  

- Mythology ; Radha& Krishna  

- Performed at all social and religious life of Manipuri  

Hindus.

- Musical instruments likepung (Drum) and kartal  

(cymbell) .

- Based on this it is called PUNGCHOLAM (performed  

only by men ).
