KATHAK
- Originated from the nomadic dancers called
KATHAKARSand got converted into a stylysed dance by
the patronage of Mughals from AKBAR’S reign.
- Mixing of HINDU and ISLAMIC cultures.
- Only classical dance in india associated with
Hindustani music.
- Instruments likePakhawaj, Tabla, Sarangi, Sitar,
Harmonium, Flute, Sarod, etc. are used.
- Greatest Patron ; NawabWajid Ali Shah of Awadh
o He developed the LucknowGharana.
- The King of Raigarh Raja Chakradhar Singh who
himself was a Kathak dancer gave birth to
RaigarhGharana of Kathak—greatest contribution to
Kathak.

Siddentra Yogi in 17th century

Narayana Swami.
- Certain techniques ; dancing on the rim of a brass plate
with pot full of water on head => called Tarangam.
- Known for Acrobatic Dancing.
- Vachikabhinaya is a feature of this dance ; given by
character called sutradar.
