Samsung is rejoicing with the release of the Galaxy Fold 4, the company's fourth major foldable device. The company often reveals all the details after a succession of hints and leaks, reinforcing our biggest suspicion: it's not a substantial upgrade.
The overall design appears a little more streamlined thanks to a smaller hinge and bezels. This mostly impacts the phone's appearance and has a little impact on how compact it can fold down—just a few thousandths of a millimetre (15.8mm thick at the hinge and 14.2mm where the sides meet). It weighs 263 grammes as opposed to the Z Fold 3's 271 grammes. The phone is still relatively heavy even if it serves as both a phone and a small tablet.
I can't say it was noticeably slimmer or lighter than I had imagined, but the finish is adequate for a premium phone. Additionally, it doesn't feel prototype-like. It's strong in a comforting way, and I don't believe it needs particular treatment. Pay attention since there's only one way to find out. Its performance in the dusty environment in the bottom of my suitcase is something I'm not sure about.
The hinge is still rather robust by design so that it will stay in place in Flex mode, but the opening-closing operation feels smooth, at least in the sample units Samsung put on display last week. The Fold 4 still has an IPX8 water resistant rating. It also boasts a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 CPU with 12GB of RAM and storage choices ranging from 256GB to 1TB, exactly like a real 2022 flagship.
The Fold 4 has several new features, including a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 3x telephoto camera, lower bezels, and a thinner hinge. Due to its little width, the front display has a little bit more room. The display appears a little less packed and more like a conventional phone, even though it doesn't contribute much. When the phone is closed, there is still a gap; Samsung has not yet achieved the finest possible flatness.
While certain software updates aim to improve multitasking, several frame and critical screen protector modifications should improve the display's long-term endurance. It is an expensive, somewhat more mainstream flagship option with the same $1,799 price for another year. But that's pretty much all.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 can withstand water. Keep in mind that no phone is waterproof, and this still holds true in this situation. Even though the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has an official rating, it's important to note that phone warranties still do not cover water damage, so you should attempt to avoid deliberately dunking it in water.
