After reading Verity, I wasn't sure if her book was mine, but I've been in the mood for romance lately, so of course, I had Hoover's latest release on my radar. Also, Verity realized that Dark She is a romance (which she doesn't really like), so maybe she didn't like it. Sounds reminiscent of him sounded tear-jerking and perhaps a little more hopeful.
In Reminders of Him, Kenna was recently released from prison in a drunken car accident that left her boyfriend Scotty dead. After the accident, she found out she was pregnant and went to jail shortly thereafter. Five years later, she returns to town hoping to see her daughter but hangs out with Scotty's best friend whom she has never met.
The short version of this review is that this book is a good version of the kind of book it was intended for. So if you want tearful romance, you're probably going to like it.
The long version of this is to say my overall impression of it was generally positive. Importantly, I found the romantic plot at its center to be cute and compelling. It also helps that both writing style and tempo are solid, as you'd expect from a seasoned writer like Hoover.
When I first read the premise, I was a little worried that the book would be a bit of a downer. I try not to overdo it. The male protagonist is more of a typical romantic protagonist, but I loved how the main character, Kena, had a great personality and was able to appreciate and root for their relationship. Said to have had a childhood… I liked her imperfection and it made the story feel a little more real.
Read or Skip?
Reminders of Him is a tearful, melodramatic romance, and it does it well. It's an uncomplicated, somewhat predictable story, neither literary nor semi-literary, so anyone wanting something like that should skip it. It's a book that does a good job of being the kind of book it's trying to be.
Most importantly, the central romance is cute and compelling. I admit I was crying reading this. I don't know if I'll be a huge romance reader, but I think something like this would be perfect to scratch that itch, as long as it gets you in the mood.
I think fans of Collen Hoover will love this book, and if you're wondering if you're going to be the kind of person who enjoys your work, check it out.
