Indian Premier League
The Indian Premier League completely changed the way cricket was played in India and the tournament opened its doors to the entertainment industry as well. Just one year before the tournament started, India had won the 2007 T20 World Cup, after which every cricket lover of India became crazy about T20 cricket. In order to cash in on the craze of Indian cricket lovers, it is planned to organize an IPL (Indian Premier League) tournament in a new way. The format of this tournament was similar to that of the English Premier League and the National Basketball League of America (NBA). The entire mind behind this first IPL tournament was Lalit Modi, who became the commissioner of the IPL. This tournament was launched in the year 2008
The tournament was started on the basis of a franchise based system. These franchises were put up for auction. The highest bidder in this auction was given the right to buy the team. The total number of teams in the tournament was 8, which were named after different cities of the country. The auction for these teams began on January 24, 2008, and the auction's base amount was set at $ 400 million. The auction ended at $ 729.59 million. The Mumbai franchise was bought by Mukesh Ambani's company Reliance Industries Limited. This franchise was the most expensive franchise of this season. Mukesh Ambani spent $ 111.9 million for it. The other expensive team was from Bangalore, which was bought by Vijay Mallya's United Breweries for $ 111.6 million. Media House Deccan Chronicle bought the Hyderabad franchise by spending $ 107 million. At the same time, Indian Cements bought the Chennai franchise for $ 91 million. Bollywood too knocked on the team to buy and the two Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla together bought the Kolkata franchise for $ 75.06 million. Preity Zinta along with Ness Wadia bought the Mohali team for $ 76 million. Infrastructure development group GMR bought the Delhi franchise for $ 84 million. The Jaipur franchise was then bought by Fraser Castilon's CEO Manoj Badale and Latalan Murdoch, along with other investors, for $ 67 million.
