There are mainly three species of Rhinos in Asia namely:-
1. Great one – horned Rhinos
2. Javan Rhinos
3. Sumatran Rhinos
• But, out of three categories, there is only 1 category of Rhinos That is found in India that is the great -one horned rhino.
• Great one- horned rhino Is also known as the Indian rhinos and It is the largest of the three is species of Rhinos.
• Poaching and the habitat loss are the two of the greatest threat with the respect to survival of the Asia's Rhinos.
And thus in this regard “ The New Delhi declaration on Asian rhinos 2019” Was launched That aimed to cover the “ 5 Rhino range nation “ that include India, Bhutan, napal, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Now, key point to note here Is the protection status of different species:-
Now both Javan and Sumatran Rhino all critically endangered, while, Indian rhino or the great one horned rhino is a vulnerable specie.
• Further, it has been listed under the schedule 1st of the wildlife protection act, 1972.
HABITAT OF ONE-HORNED RHINOS
• So , the habitat of 1 horned rhino is mainly restricted to a small area along with the indo- Nepal terai region, Further It is also found in the western Bengal and assam region.
• Some of the wildlife sanctuary Or the National Park they have one -horned rhino:-
1.Manas wildlife sanctuary
2. Orang wildlife sanctuary
3. Kaziranga National Park
Now, in the recent time government begin a project with an aim to create a DNA profile of all the rhinos in the country.
Further, government also introduced in 2019 “The national rhino conservation strategy” to conserve The great one horned rhino or the Indian rhino.
Further, government has also introduced “the Indian rhino vision 2020” that is a partnership among the government of Assam and other international foundations and the border territorial council.
And, this vision was designed in 2005, so, as to attain a population of 3000 wild one horned rhino in the seven protected areas of Assam By the year in 2020.
• Now, as we discuss by far the rhinos are available in three National Park and wildlife sanctuary that is kaziranga, orang and Pobitora.
• Further, it's aimed to ensure that these rhinos are spread to other 4 protected areas that is Manas , Laokhowa, Dibrusaikhowa and
buracharpori- kochmora.
