No matter how much time has passed, we live in a society where we are still reluctant to accept women marrying women. However, it is a custom that has been around for centuries among the Kurian tribes of Tanzania. In Naymanko, a village in Tanzania, women marry women. This ritual is known as nymba ntobhu. But this is not about love or physical attraction. Rather, it is a method chosen by women themselves for the safety of women.
The majority of women in the Kuria tribe have been subjected to physical or mental abuse by their husbands.
This is the highest rate of domestic violence in Tanzania. Women are marrying women to save themselves from this increasing persecution. They do not marry for fun, but live together as a family. They do everything in a family together, except for sex, going to work, looking after the babies, and doing household chores.
It is customary for young widows to marry young women who have no sons. One wonders how the series would have survived if they had been married like this. The girl who marries has the right to find a man. It's just a way to have heirs. The man has no right over the children born in this relationship. According to tribal law, property inherited only by men is thus reserved for women. In some cases, an older woman may marry more than one woman. The older woman sees her partner women in the position of niece. The children she has are in the position of grandchildren. But at the same time, the homosexuality and love that exists in other countries is unheard of here.
Like other traditional marriages, the bride pays the dowry. It is customary for the elderly woman's family to give the girl's money to the younger partner's family. Young women see this as a way to escape from domestic violence and bullying. The elderly woman is the guardian of the children. The child is usually given the family name of the adult woman. The man who gives the child to the woman will be given food or auto instead. In rare cases, males may return claiming paternity of the child. What they usually do to avoid it is pick someone they don't know in the village. These men are called "street men".
Usually women have no right to have property there. The property of widowed women goes to any male relatives. Also, women are not allowed to remarry as they get older. Because men there do not want to marry women who cannot conceive. Thus, many choose female partners in situations where the entire life of the elderly widow is at stake. By marrying younger girls, the property comes into their own. And those girls also give children to the widow. Thus they too have an heir.
As far as girls are concerned, these women's homes are the best defense against male violence. There they can live in peace without being beaten or trampled by their husbands.
