A smart meter is a mechanical device that measures the electricity consumption of a building. In recent former times, electricity meter reading was done manually, later on, it became an automated meter reading device.
Electricity Meter :
It is also known as electrical meter, electric meter, energy meter. A device that measures units of the electricity consumed or the device which is used for the billing purpose of the overall consumption by any residences, a business, or an electrically powered device. The unit of electric meter is kWh(kilowatt-hour) 1kWh = 1000 watt
Smart Electricity Meter:
It is the newest addition to the type of electricity meters. It looks similar to traditional meters i.e. better than electromechanical and electronic meters. As the regular meter, they also provide similar services and connect with the utility through the internet. Meter readings are automatically sent via internet connectivity. This type of meter saves money for taking the unit readings and avoids any mistake of taking the incorrect reading.
The government of India has taken initiative programs for improving the electricity power supply namely 'Make In India', 'Smart Cities'. There are some problems associated with the power sector like AT&C losses, inefficient distribution, and transmission system because of age-old infrastructure. There is a need for change according to the updating technology.
In the current metering system, consumers are presented with monthly used consumption of electricity with their bills.
Smart Energy meters can be a crucial tool for the improvement of power losses, revenue protection, quality control, image building, consumer satisfaction, electricity theft detection, overcome problems faced by older meters.
Due to emerging real-time-based technologies, one can get benefits like getting live updates of power consumption of electricity and its overall monitoring, monthly online bills, etc in near future. The smart meter enables two-way communication between the meter and the central system. Unlike domestic energy meter monitoring, smart meters can gather data for remote reporting.
According to the news site of The Economic Times, EESL(Energy Efficiency Services Limited) completes the installation of 10 lakh smart meters across the country. They are setting the target of installing approx 25 crores for the next three years for now.
This topic concludes that many states in our country are improving the way of using and installing smart electricity meters. But still, there is a need to improve the electricity in other parts of the country of having an issue in receiving a complete electricity supply.
