After nearly 4 years stranded on cargo ship in Egypt, a Syrian crew member finally goes home | CBC Radio

The Suez Canal in Egypt has been a hotly debated topic for some time. A large cargo ship was stranded here and hundreds of other ships followed were also stranded. But now things are back to normal, and for the past four years, a man has been stranded on his ship in the same canal, unable to go anywhere. This is Muhammad Aisha, a Syrian citizen. Muhammad was trapped on a four-year-old cargo ship. This has been the case since 2017 with Mohammed Aisha, the ship's chief executive officer. Sometimes swimming comes ashore, but not to stay onshore, but to collect food and water. Trapped on a ship full of mud and cargo, he pleads for help. He says he was forced to stay on this ship despite all the hardships. Every day he stays there is full of misery for him. At night the ship would be like a graveyard. Absolutely desolate without any sound or light.

This is the fourth year he has been imprisoned in this shooting prison. That too alone. His physical and mental health, which is completely isolated, is deteriorating day by day. Each time he risked his life, he swam ashore for basic necessities such as food and water. According to the report, Mohammed's ship was seized due to a problem with security equipment and documents. He is a sailor. The Egyptian court declared Muhammad the legal guardian of the ship. But Muhammad says he signed it without understanding what it said. Anyway, he's been stuck here ever since. He can leave the ship only if the ship is taken away. His passport has also been confiscated. He said that despite repeated requests for help, no one provided him with clean water, basic necessities, or diesel oil. Thatโ€™s because every time I have to move to shore for food, water, and phone charging. Nowadays, it is very difficult to reach the shore due to cold and poor health. Many times he has gone to drown.

In a way, this is worse than prison. Only the Egyptian port authorities can release him. They have many practical ways to send Muhammad to Syria. But so far nothing has been done. Instead, Egyptian port authorities did not respond to urgent emails from the International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) describing his plight. The rest of the workers returned home last October. After that, Muhammad is alone. A doctor who examined him found that he was experiencing all the symptoms of a prisoner in poor condition. He also suffers from malnutrition, anemia, leg pain, and mental illness. "I have been asked several times to go home, but the port authorities do not allow me to go," he said. In addition to receiving medical treatment for Mohammed, the ITF has promised to pay for his accommodation and flight at the hotel. But the Egyptian authorities hold his passport and ignore his condition. To make matters worse, his passport expired on March 22. This makes things more complicated. โ€œThis must be one of the worst cases we have ever faced.

Four years later, it's provocative that the Egyptian port authorities are still doing nothing, "said Steve Trodale, coordinator of the ITF inspectorate. The owner of the ship said that he had done his best to save Muhammad Aisha, the ship's legal guardian and that nothing more could be done.
