It's important to know about our Indian-based cattle and their benefits in these modern days.

The things to be noted are:

  • Origin
  • Identification
  • Milk Production
  • Benefits

     Origin :

The origin place of gir is Gujarat. In the gir hills and forest of kathiawar that includes some districts of Gujarat are the origins of these breeds. So the name gir was obtained for the gir hills. It is also known as kathiawar, suit, Desan, Gujarati, and Sorti some of the names of the districts Gujarat's.

      Identification :

The identification was done based on the following basics.

Gir Cow
  • Colour :

Mostly 80% of gir cows are found in red body colour. There are various types of colour found like yellowish to dark red, red body colour with white spots, and complete white body colour with red spots. there rare cases like complete white, red and yellowish colour body cows. Compared to female cows male cows have darker shades of colour.

  • Ears :

Ears are one of the important things to identify gir cows because there are shaped as a folded leaf. Its length was too long as compared to normal cattle breeds around 30cm.

  • Horns :

Its shape looks like kankrej cow famously knows as bhahubali cows. These are shaped as curved inclined upwards and backward.

Milk Production :

On average gir cow gives 12 liters of milk per day. During the first calving period on average 1600 to 1700 kg of milk per lactation is produced. In the case of mature cows, there is 1800 to 2000 kg of milk per lactation on average. One of the most high milk yielding cattle breed of India therefore most of dairy farmers are raising this cattle.

Benefits :

  • A2 Milk :

Gir cow produces A2 milk, which is considered as highest premium quality of milk due to the presence of A2 type beta-casein protein.

  • Urine :

There are some any usages with gir cow urine like

  1. The urine was used in agriculture to make organic spares to control pets.
  2. In ayurvedic medicines and some cosmetics products like soap and shampoos.
  • Strong Immune System :

As compared to hybrid breeds and imported cattle gir breed has high resistance to diseases. As these are native breeds they can sustain in any climate of India.

These are some basic and important things to be noticed by a beginner of the dairy farmer. I hope most of them choose Native Indian breeds for farming than hybrid foreign breeds which produce less protein milk like A1 milk.

There are so many breeds in India like gir they can help the dairy farmer to increase their financial growth as well as the farm. Other different Indian breeds like Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Rathi.
