Many people know that a mermaid is just a fictional aquatic creature. Many rumors have been shared by many people saying that mermaids have been found in many parts of the world. It is known that such photos are either artificially created or are still images from a movie made in connection with mermaids. However, the fictional mermaid has a history.
The history of the mermaid dates back to the 4th century. The ancient Syrians worshiped Atargatis, a goddess who could change her form when she entered the water. The deity was worshiped by ancient people who were associated with fishing as far back as Rome and believed that it would bring them wealth and prosperity. But it can be seen in history that the male fish called 'Merman' was worshiped centuries before this. In the ancient Mesopotamian religion Adapa, the god Onus had a male form above the waist and a fish form below the waist, like a mermaid.
The English word for mermaid is derived from the Old English word mer (sea) and maid (woman). At least some ancient societies believed that humans came from a mermaid. It was even believed in ancient times that Aquamarine gemstone is made from the tears of mermaids.
Many cultures around the world had similar concepts. They also believed that mermaids, like the sirens of Greek mythology, sang and enchanted men and gods. Some stories circulated of mermaids unwittingly killing drowning men while trying to save them. Some also believed that mermaids sometimes took humans to their kingdom under the sea.
The mythical creature called Matsyakanyaka is believed to have originated from a marine mammal called the sea cow.
Even in the 21st century, there are those who believe that such a creature exists in the world even though it is a fictional creature.
About fifty Hollywood movies have been released based on the mermaid. 'Aquamarine', 'The Little Mermaid', 'Empires of the Deep' and the mermaid from On Stranger Tides in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film series are just a few of the films that caught the audience's attention. In the 1991 Hindi film 'Lal Pari', the mermaid was also the central character. The double-tailed mermaid in the Starbucks coffee shop logo is as famous as Starbucks itself.
