Why do you need to know shocking facts about the influence of peer pressure?

  • Priya Nagarajan

You need not say “NO” to yourself while saying “YES” to others.

The influence of peer pressure either creates or breaks you. You get nightmares by the influence of negative peer pressure. Alternatively, you succeed in your dreams when you get influenced by positive peer pressure.

During our toddler days, our parents choose everything. Even friends fall in that category. So, our life was on a smooth road. But, when we become older, we decide on our friends and whom to stay with. That need not always be a safer zone.

When you are at school and in other activities, you spend more time with peers than your family members. Thus, you develop a close bond between them and connect to them as an extended family.

Likewise, it is natural to identify and compare themselves through their peers. They want to fit in, be like their peer they admire, do what others are doing, or have what others have.

Sometimes, the stresses in your life can come from your peers. They may try to pressure you to do things you are uncomfortable with, enjoy shoplifting, drugs or drinking, or risks during driving.

There are different peer pressures:

  1. Spoken Peer Pressure:

When a teenager in a one-on-one environment asks, suggests, persuades, or directs another to engage in a specific behavior, we know it has spoken peer pressure. This influence has a stronger chance of adhering to one’s core values and beliefs.

  1. Unspoken Peer Pressure:

This influence makes you choose whether they have to follow along when they expose to one or more peers. Many teens lack the mental maturity to control impulses, so they take long-term decisions.

  1. Direct Peer Pressure:

This behavior-centric pressure can either speak or unspoken, like taking an alcoholic drink o smoking.

  1. Indirect Peer Pressure:

It is like unspoken peer pressure. It influences an introvert. It is hearing gossip from another person and reacting to it.

  1. Negative Peer Pressure:

When a teen feels pressure to behave against their moral code or we know family values as negative peer pressure. It tempts them to follow or walk away from the leader. Teens often lack the skills to come up with an excuse or say no to negative peer pressure.

  1. Positive Peer Pressure:

Positive peer pressure influences behaviors like healthy, age-appropriate, or socially acceptable pressure.

Handling Peer Pressure:

It is an enormous task to resist peer pressure. Communicating with adults openly will make you decide the possibilities.

Say NO to resist:

When you are feeling uncomfortable as you get influenced, then you have to decline or resist peer pressure. If you feel you don’t want to do something, then you have to plan and practice how to decline.

Know yourself:

When you face pressure on risky behavior, remember your values as it will boost your confidence.

Choosing the right friends:

Adolescence age is risky if you do not choose your friends wisely. In addition, friends who support your values will stand up for you in a difficult situation.
