Keeping yourself updated is a good thing. You should be aware of what's going on in this world. Watching news channels and reading articles is also good. But now a days, it is creating some serious issues.

The topic is Doomsday Scrolling or we can say Doomsday Surfing.

What Is Doomsday Surfing?

As the name indicates, Doomsday surfing or scrolling means to keep searching for something bad which may happen or is happening at present.

Science Behind Doomsday Surfing :

When your brain gets to know about something good like reading positive thoughts, quotes or watching good movies. Then a hormone β€˜Dopamine’ starts releasing. It is a feel good hormone means you start feeling good mentally. Sometimes, you may become addicted to it. Release of this hormone is very addictive. You can easily become habitual to it without even knowing. Similarly when you listen to any bad or shocking news, your body reflects it in the same way as for good feeling. This can also be addictive according to a research.

Example : When you start visiting any particular youtube channel frequently, watching same kind of videos on that channel regularly will give you a good feeling from inside. That means your body is releasing Dopamine, this hormone starts flowing inside your body.

As everyone know that our nation is fighting against huge pandemic. A bad news comes everyday. Like how much people died due to corona virus, less oxygen than demand, lack of oxygen cylinders, no slots for vaccination, no ventilator beds left. News is easily accessible by everyone. That's why people are becoming addicted to surf for such kind of news.

Such people don't even care about their sleeping routine, work or study. They watch or read news all the time which impacts their brain very badly.

Even social media works on this type of algorithm. You may have noticed that whatever you'll watch or read on Facebook or Youtube, the same type of content will appear as suggested ones for you. Whenever you watch news related to corona virus, social media algorithm will record it for further use and show the same type of content again and again.

Bad Effects :

Researches says that the people who watch or surf such type of news more and more at regular basis may have bad effect on their health such as ;

  • Feeling depressed
  • Suffer from lack of sleep
  • Weak immune system
  • Wellbeing goes down

What To Do? 

  • Try to surf very limited news.
  • Remove such type of news applications from your devices which continuously send notifications of bad news.
  • Turn off notifications of news application in your device.
  • Keep an eye on the devices of your family members too, make sure they may not become addicted to the same.
