The Proposal is a comedy-drama that centres on the propensity of two affluent families to court marriage in an effort to strengthen their bonds and expand their fortunes. The drama started with Ivan Lomov paying a visit to his affluent neighbour Stephan Chubukov. Dressed impeccably, Lomov, a wealthy man himself, had come to ask Chubukov's twenty-five-year-old daughter Natalya Stepanovna for her hand in marriage. Chubukov was first taken aback by Lomov's unexpected arrival and thought the young man might not come back for the money. Lomov was a thirty-five-year-old man who experienced intense heart palpitations and was easily agitated. He believed that Natalya was a well-educated, average-looking woman who would make a fantastic housekeeper.

Lomov moved, and they suddenly offered him some Chubukov covered his hand with Natalya's and gave her some water to sip. Although they decided to get married, Natalya's argument that Squeezer was superior to Guess continued. But Lomov was stubborn and would not concede that Squeezer, Natalya's dog, was superior to Guess, his dog. The characters' verbal altercation continued when the curtain came down.
