Siachen which Means the land of roses also has the uncertain distinction of being the world’s highest battlefield. A triangular bit of land between Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) and the part ceded by Pakistan to the Chinese.
The siachen dispute Is the direct result of the doubt that exists in the Karachi ceasefire agreement of July 1949. This Karachi agreement establish the ceasefire line, the position of the two militaries at the end of the 1947-1948 War, who did not determined beyond Grid reference NJ9842( NJ9842 is the northernmost location between India and Pakistan ceasefire line(LOC)) Which falls South of the siachen glacier , do the Chinese border but left it as “chalunka(on the shyok river).
Basically, Grid reference system is a type of geographic coordinate system which defines locations in maps by using coordinates.
STRATEGIC LOCATION
Siachen glacier Sits at a very strategic location With Pakistan on the left and China on the right. So Pakistan interpreted It as north-Eastwards to claim the area beyond the Saltoro Ridge And beyond siachen as its own. This would give Pakistan direct connectivity to China as well as the strategic oversight over the ladakh region and on the crucial leh-srinagar highway which is a posing a serious thread to India.
OPERATION MEGDOOT
In 1983, Pakistan generals decide to stake their claim through troop deployment to the siachen glacier.
To seized Pakistan, India launched operation meghdoot in April 1984 and occupied the high points of the Siachen glacier. Now, the Indian army currently controls all of the 70 kilometers long Siachen glacier And all of its tributary glaciers, As well as the 3 main passes of Saltoro Ridge immediately west of the glacier,
· Sia La
· Bilafond La
· Gyong La.
Thus, holding onto the tactical advantage of high ground.
*10 Indian army soldiers were buried on the siachen glacier’s Avalanche. Avalanches are a threat not just to Indian soldiers, but also to the Pakistani troops.
In April 2012, in the Gayari sector, 129 soldiers of the 6th northern Light Infantry of the Pakistani military and 11 civilians’ contractors were buried by a massive avalanche.
According to the reliable estimates, since 1984, when India beat Pakistan by a few days to occupy many of these strategic locations on the glacier, over 2000 soldiers from both sides have died on the Siachen glacier .
*There were so many efforts done by both sides for demilitarization in siachen but, the talks met with a major roadblock.
