The term “New Women” was first time used by an Irish feminist writer Sarah Grand in 1894 in her article which is published in North American Review. In this article, she used this term to define those women who fight to liberate themselves from the traditional stereotypical mindset of society and controls which are imposed by a male-dominated patriarchal world order. who raises her voice for herself. Sarah wants to explain the women's role in the emerging world for carving out of fulfilling, complete and equitable life as equal human being along with men. The women's struggle against unjust, unequal, and biased world order started in the late 19th century has helped her to emerge as a much liberated, feminist, “new woman” in the 20th century.
So, let's talk about the situation of New women's in India: -
if we want to understand the “new women” status in India, it is better to look first at reports which are published in 2017 by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UN Women. Out of 227 countries, India has been ranked at 148th position in the World in terms of Women in executive government and Parliament.
In this report, India's position is even lower than Bangladesh and Pakistan. In India, women constitute only 11.5% of 542-MPs in Lok sabha and 11% of 245 members of Rajya sabha.
In terms of women ministers, India ranked just 88th with only 4-5 female ministers in the cabinet which is far below then Indonesia which is having 25.6% women ministers. there are 43.5% female ministers in Nordic Countries, even after a 6% decline from the previous position of almost 50% along with men.
this report shows the bad situation of the state gender inequality in political decision-making in the world and more so in countries like India.
There is an improvement, But women are yet to be empowered to play a level playing field along with men in all gamut of Human interaction. Women must be given equal rights and powers and represented equally in all human activities. Equal representation of women is a fundamental prerequisite for effective democracy and integrated development.
Gender equality is written our preamble, there are fundamental rights, fundamental duties, and DPSPs in our Indian constitution but, wait…….The reality is something else, If we look at the gender equality situation of our country, still, there are many areas where women have no freedom or struggle for freedom and equality on a daily basis especially, north India region.
In my opinion, women should gain their own freedom by themselves.
