Does India Need Warships ?

India's flag for five decades Commissioning the new avatar of the first aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is a celebration for the nation. The original ship was of 16,000 tonnes but it is three times that of 42,800 tonnes. Also, it is not only the largest warship ever built in India but also of indigenous design. This made India one of the elite nations capable of building such warships. At present the UK is also not included in them. But immediately three questions arise, does India need aircraft carriers? If so, what kind and how much and the third question is, which weapons should we use from these warships, and where will they come from? Aircraft warship or submarine? This debate has been going on in the naval camp for more than 75 years. In World War II, especially the huge American and Japanese warships reshaped sea warfare. Germany was insisting on its own submarines, which were called U-boats. This gave rise to debate as to whether to exercise control over the seas ('C-control') using warships or to give the enemy no sea control ('C-denial') using submarines. Western countries adopted the Native American principle of 'Sea-control', while the Soviet Navy and that camp invested heavily in measures to keep the enemy away. He built a huge fleet of submarines that could strike extremely lethally without making any noise.

In the last decades of the Cold War, the Soviet Union built a small aircraft carrier, which was later sold to India. It was named 'Vikramaditya', it is the leading aircraft carrier of India today. It was given a size of 44,500 tonnes. Meanwhile, the Indian Navy also acquired an old British ship, which was named 'INS Viraat'. It weighs 23,000 tonnes and is one and a half times bigger than the earlier 'Vikrant'. In 1942 the Royal Navy commissioned new aircraft carriers known as the 'Majestic' class. By the time the war was over, many ships were only half-built. One of them was bought by India and it was completely built in Belfast. This became the first 'INS Vikrant', thus the aircraft carrier vs submarine debate that had been going on in the Indian Navy for more than a decade was decided, but the 1965 war with troublesome results was such that the Indian Navy was about I hardly want to talk.
