SECTION 2

Vandana, who was sitting closest to the door where she left, peered at her. “Look at her stove! It looks like one of those described in old classics!” she whispered.

“A lot of people are sentimentally attached to their old possession!” replied Indu, refusing to rise to Vandana's bait.

Indu and Vandana sitting with Miss Evelyn Brown

“Even calendars eighty years old?” asked Vandana, staring wide-eyed at the calendar on the wall that belonged to the year 1932.

Feeling uneasy and yet unwilling to acknowledge it, Indu replied, “Yes, even calendars!”

At that moment Miss Evelyn Brown walked in with a tray, bearing two mugs of streaming cocoa and a plate piled high with some delicious looking scones.

“You will love it here, I'm sure. There is so much around!” She went on to tell about the town — it's clock tower, the vendors with their wares laden on ponies, the sparkling lake with its boats, the charm of the mall and the tigers that roamed the mountains and sometimes wandering into the town in search of prey.

         “Tigers?” echoed both together.

“Yes! The man-eaters. Why, only last summer there was on the rampage and dear old Jim had to be summoned post-haste to take care of it!”

“Jim?” asked Indu. Surely Miss Brown couldn't mean Jim Corbett?

“Jim Corbett. Surely you girls have heard of him?”

Vandana pinched Indu who truly hard not to wince.

By now they were quite certain that Miss Brown was not only eccentric but was also quite senile.

Just as the grandfather clock struck half-past seven, they heard a gate click open in the front.

“Thank you very much for the lovely scones and cocoa. I think we should be going; our parents seem to have returned,” said Indu, getting up.

“Bye-bye, my dears! It has been nice having you over. Here is the candle!” She gave them a homemade candle.
