Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009) was an American artist, musician, lyricist, and philanthropist. He is often referred to as the "king of pop" and is recognized as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century.
Throughout his forty-year career, his significant contributions to the realms of music, dance, and fashion, alongside his extensively publicized personal life, have established him as a worldwide icon within the realm of pop culture. Jackson has had a profound impact on artists across various musical genres. His stage and video performances have notably popularized street dance techniques, including the iconic moonwalk, which he himself named, as well as the robot dance
He is the eighth offspring of the Jackson family, and his public debut occurred in 1964 alongside his elder siblings Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon, forming the Jackson 5 (renamed the Jacksons). In 1968, the Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records, where they attained international acclaim, with Michael Jackson serving as the lead vocalist. Jackson embarked on a solo career in 1971, during his tenure at Motown, and released several chart-topping singles. He emerged as a worldwide solo sensation with his 1979 album "Off the Wall."
The music videos for his 1982 album Thriller, like as "Beat It," "Billie Jean," and "Thriller," are recognized with dismantling racial boundaries and redefining the genre as both an artistic medium and a marketing tool. With the visuals for his albums Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), history: Past, Present, and Future, Book I (1995), and Invincible (2001), he contributed to the popularization of MTV and kept pushing the boundaries of creativity. While Bad was the first album to deliver five number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100, Thriller is the best-selling album of all time.
Jackson started to attract controversy and rumors in the late 1980s as a result of his shifting relationships, looks, conduct, and way of life. He was charged with sexually molesting a family friend's child in 1993. Jackson was not prosecuted because there was insufficient proof, and the case was resolved outside of civil court. He was tried in 2005 and found not guilty of many counts of child sexual assault in addition to other allegations.
There was no proof of Jackson's illegal activity discovered by the FBI. 2009 saw Jackson planning for a This Is It return concert series when he overdosed on propofol, a medication prescribed by his personal doctor Conrad Murray. Murray's involvement in Jackson's demise led to his 2011 conviction for involuntary manslaughter. His passing caused uproar around the globe, which in turn caused an unheard-of spike in Internet traffic and music sales. An estimated 2.5 billion people watched the memorial ceremony for Michael Jackson that was aired from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
