The Gardens by the Bay (GBTB) is a sprawling urban oasis covering 105 hectares (260 acres) in the Central Region of Singapore, located next to the Marina Reservoir. The park features three stunning waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden in Marina South, Bay East Garden with the Founders' Memorial in Marina East, and Bay Central Garden in the Downtown Core and Kallang.
The most expansive of these gardens is the Bay South Garden, occupying 54 hectares (130 acres) and designed by Grant Associates. Its Flower Dome holds the title of the world's largest glass greenhouse.
Gardens by the Bay was an integral element of the country's vision to evolve its "Garden City" into a "City in a Garden", focusing on elevating the quality of life by enriching the greenery and plant life within the urban landscape. Initially unveiled by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during Singapore's National Day Rally in 2005, Gardens by the Bay was designed to be Singapore's premier outdoor recreational area and one of the nation’s emblematic landmarks.
A renowned destination for tourists in Singapore, the park welcomed 6.4 million guests in 2014, surpassed 20 million by November 2015, and exceeded 50 million by 2018. In 2024, TripAdvisor's Traveler's Choice Awards recognized it as the eighth-best destination globally and the top one in Asia.
The conservatory complex at Gardens by the Bay features two climate-controlled conservatories – the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, positioned along the edge of Marina Reservoir. Designed by WilkinsonEyre and Grant Associates, these conservatories aim to serve as a showcase for energy-efficient and sustainable architectural technologies, while also offering an all-weather educational and entertainment venue within the Gardens.
Each conservatory spans a vast area (approximately 1 hectare (2.5 acres)), and the Flower Dome holds the title of the largest column-free glasshouse in the world.
The design of glasshouses is unique: featuring a sizable glass roof without the need for extra interior support (like columns) and focusing on reducing the environmental impact. Rainwater is gathered from the top and circulated through the cooling system that is linked to the Supertrees. The Supertrees are utilized for releasing hot air and cooling circulated water.
Even though access to the garden complex is complimentary, there is a fee required for entry to the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome as well as for accessing the Supertree skywalk.
The optimal time to go to Gardens By the Bay is during the winter season, from November to March when the weather is cooler and more pleasant. This is the perfect moment to visit the gardens, admire its vibrant beauty, and experience its various attractions.
