Food is any substance consumed to provide nutrition to every individual. It is usually animal and plant-based and contains essential nutrients such as carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.
Foods are grouped together to provide a certain amount of nutrient which are beneficial for individuals, to meet the requirement individual need to eat a variety from each of food groups daily in recommended amounts.
CLASSIFICATION OF FOOD GROUPS
Food can be classified into different groups such as;
Basic four group:- Food at a basic level divided into four groups
Basic five group:- The Indian council of medical research has classified food items into basic five food groups.
FOOD CLASSIFIED ON ITS FUNCTIONALITY
Energy yielding foods:- Food products that are rich in carbohydrates and fats, they are used by the body to produce energy. Food products such as rice, wheat flour, cereals and pulses etc are part of energy-yielding food groups.
Bodybuilding foods:- Food that is rich in protein are bodybuilding foods. Such as meat, milk, eggs, fish, pulses etc.
Protective foods:- Foods are rich in vitamin and minerals come under in this group, they are protecting us from disease and health problems. Such as milk, fruits, vegetables, eggs etc.
BALANCED DIET
A balanced diet is a diet which provides all nutrients in required amounts and proper proportion. It can be easily obtained by a blend of the basic five food groups.
Nutritents requirements vary with age, gender, physiological status and physical activity. People should eat 5 portions or more of fruits and vegetables a day.
A balanced diet should provide other non-nutrient such as dietary fibre, antioxidants and phytochemicals which is best for health benefit.
A balanced diet should provide around 50-60% of total calories from complex carbohydrate and about 10-15% from protein and about 20-30% from visible and invisible fats.
Citrus Food: - Citrus fruits are very good to build the immune system. Treat your body with fruits that are full of nutrients. Vitamin C helps you build the immune system, vitamin c increase the production of white blood cells that are fighting infections and protecting your body. Almost all citrus fruits high in vitamin c.
