Hello Readers..
I hope my previous blog about blood donation have helped or been an important awareness information for you all.
In my journey to become a doctor , i have learnt quite a lot of things during my learning phase, and i wish to impart some of that useful yet basic knowledge to others via my blogs.
I guess you guys have heard or seen doctors or even common man performing CPR on chest region when someone collapses or has a heart attack.
Let's talk about it.
What is CPR ?
CPR= Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
It means , reviving the person and helping them to regain their heartbeat or blood circulation through heart and/or breathing.
We know our body is working because of the blood that is flowing in our blood vessels reaching all of our organs and supplying them to meet their demands. Blood basically acts as a carrier of the food/fuel for the organs. The food/fuel must have oxygen, and so our lungs form the important part of our survival. Because of lungs and heart are connected in a way that oxygen is supplied via the blood pumped by the heart to the various organs.
CPR is a life saving emergency procedure for a victim who has signs of cardiac arrest (ie, unresponsive, no normal breathing, and no pulse).
The 2 key components of CPR are Chest compressions and Breaths.
What is Cadiac arrest ?
The sudden stoppage of heart function in a person, who may or may not have been diagnosed with a heart disease. It can come on suddenly , sometimes without any indications or in the wake of other symptoms. It is often fatal if appropriate steps aren't taken immediately.
It is an emergency condition!
Is Cardiac arrest same as Heart attack?
NO.
Heart attack refers to sudden blockage or spasm which occurs in a blood vessel , cutting off or restricting the blood supply and oxygen to the heart muscle itself. The heart continues to pump the blood but the longer the blood supply is restricted to its muscles , the greater damage occurs to the heart muscle , decreasing its functional capacity.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
2. Heart Attack - Chest discomfort, Suffocating Chest pain, pain in the left side of chest region, left arm or jaw , shortness of breath, weakness, heart palpitations.
.
So the first component of CPR ie, the Chest Compressions are done to stimulate the heart function that is, pumping action so the blood flow continues throughout, especially towards the vital organs like brain, aiding in the revival of the person, or until the proper medical care arrives and takes over.
