Welcome back readers..

In the previous blog, I have introduced the 2 key components of CPR to you .

  1. Chest compressions
  2. Breaths

There is another crucial component ie, Airway.

Yes, A Patent airway is necessary to provide sufficient and effective Breaths to the victim.

Now let say, A person collapses infront of you while you are jogging in the park early in the morning. What should you do???

.

  • First and foremost , check the scene around you and the collapsed person by a quick look so that you can help the person without causing any more harm to them or even yourself.
  • Tap on the person's shoulders or call out loudly to check for their response.
  • If no response, Shout for help; Maybe someone else be there to help you.
  • Make a call to the emergency services by your own or with the help of the second helping person and tell them all the details about the location and the victim and don't hang up the call until they tell you to!
  • With your first 2-3 fingers , check for the pulse(carotid pulse) , at the lateral side of the trachea which is in the centre of neck.., for less than 10 seconds only. Simultaneously, check for the rise of chest to look for breathing.

.

  1. Normal Breathing and Pulse felt- Roll the victim onto left side. And wait until medical emergency services arrive.
  2. No Normal Breathing ; Pulse present - Provide Rescue Breaths :- 1 Breath every 6 seconds or 10 breaths/min.  Check pulse every 2 minutes.
  3. No Normal Breathing ; Pulse not felt - START CPR.

CPR- 30 Chest Compressions and 2 Breaths (in cycles)

How to perform Chest Compressions?

  • Place victim in the flat, faceup position.
  • Position yourself at the side of the victim
  • Place the heel of one hand on the lower half of breastbone of victim's chest , and heel of other hand on the top of first one.
  • Straighten your arms so that your shoulders are directly over the hands at right angle approx.
  • Push Hard and Push Fast- Compress at a rate of 100-120/min with a depth of 5 cm ; Allow chest recoils after each compression.

So, after 30 chest compressions, Give 2 effective breaths. Deliver each breath over 1 second. Look for the chest rise while giving breaths.

For effective breaths, airway should be patent!

How to open AIRWAYS?

  1. Head tilt- Chin lift
  2. Jaw thrust

Try to provide 2 effective breaths and resume the chest compressions in less than 10 seconds.

Continue the cycles until the patient becomes responsive or the emergency services arrive and take over.

.

.

PS: All this is the very basic knowledge of How to handle the emergency situations. There is a lot behind it. You can watch the technique to provide CPR on youtube also.
