Later it came under the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan (1760 to 1799). It was ceded to the East India Company in 1799 by a treaty. However, this beautiful hilly area remained unknown to the British till 1818.

Editorial is a town located at an altitude of 2,637 meters.   Peak is located at Ooty.  Thought is the highest peak in the Nilgiris district.  The height of Thought is 2636 m.  It is followed by Snow Town Hill with a height of 2530 m, Club Hill with a height of 2448 m and Elk Hill with a height of 2466 m.

Uthai`s main tourist attraction is the Botanical Garden.  Ooty Botanical Garden was built between 1847–67 by M.C.  Created by an Englishman named Ivor.

The Kathy Valley View is reputed to be the second largest valley in the world.  Ooty Lake Boathouse is a lake created by John Sullivan.  Created in 1823–1825.
