Good evening guys , happy to meet you guys with another blog . today's blog I am gonna share an extract of a wonderful poem with you guys . The name of the poem is “ The English Words ” by V.K Gokak .
V.k Gokak was born on 9th august 1909 in a place called Savanur that formed a part of the kingdom of Mysore in British India . he was a major writer in kannada language . he got Jnanpith award in 1990 in a place for his epic Bharatha Sindhu Rashmi Gokak was honoured by Padma Shri for his work “ Dyava Prithvi “.
The poem starts by pointing out the faults and defects of the English language after it entered our country. Gokak says that it almost killed us all . He says that the English language bleached us , as if we have impurities . He compares it with a leech , it sucked our mother languages , our blood was renewed , forced with a language that we were never used to . He says that the English language really created an impact on Indians . They came devouring and destroying all our dark thick forest , creepers , trees etc .. our tropical sources were so thick that even sunlight could enter , but they demolished all the resources in the name of creating civilization .
English became the dawn of our lives . He uses the metaphor , “ Thornmills in our flesh “ , to express the negative impacts of the English language . like winged seeds they travelled all along the seas and came to settle in the warm silent india . They were planted here as seeds , which got rooted and spread all over the world . Indians were given the taste of english in the earlier days , and so they got attracted to it . He says , the illumination brought by the English words will never be forgotten .Again he uses a phrase , “ they came like migrating home -coming bees and sweetened our hearts with the new language , turning out to destroy our open languages .
he finishes the poem by writing ,
In the beginning was the Word
and the Word was God.
The Word is in the middle
and the Word is Man.
In the end will be the Word
and the Word will be God in Man
The poet Gokak didn't boast his feeling to not learn english . he refers , because of that many anicient languages are coming to extinction and most of use tend to forget our mother languages . he must give equal importance for them too .
Thanks for reading guys !💙
