hello guys , today i am going to review the movie “shoplifters” .
What is my idea on a family ? Love , happiness , songs , outings , togetherness and most of them are some sweet and cosy thoughts . HIROKAZU KORE-EDA , the director of the fantastic film “SHOPLIFTERS” shows a different perspective of family . This movie won PALME d’OR AWARDS and was officially nominated for the Oscar . The movie is simple yet complex with its twists and beautifully depicts the idea of family .
The family in this movie lives in the outskirts of tokyo , in a small dirty and scratch like home where there lives almost 5 to 6 members . the family runs with the pension of grandma kiki , and they all so some small jobs and gets money which is far away from enough . so , just like the title of the movie , they shoplift in the local stores by stealing some little items which is essential for their lives and not any luxury things . father of the family , osama shoplifts , his wife does laundry job and aki , assuming her the sister of osama , works in a club .
The movie starts with osama and his son shota stealing in the store . Osama gives some hand signals and gestures to shota and covers him , while shots grab things and hide in his bags . On the way home , shota says that he forgot to steal shampoo and osama replies that it’s cold outside and they could steal it next time . Then near their home , they found this small girl, Sasaki, freezing in the cold . Osama takes her to his home . They named her Yuri and Yuri seems to be affected physically and mentally . His wife asks him to leave her after the dinner , but they end up adopting the girl illegally . The scene where the parents of yuri fight about having a child was a mistake .
Yuri becomes a part of this family . We can see that even though Osama's family is poor , they have a kind heart to take care of a girl . Then mother Ando gets pretty close with Yuri , treating her like their own daughter . Osama teaches shoplifting to Yuri and eventually they find Yuri missing in the TV news .
The police caught them and when enquired osama said “ i don’t know anything else to teach the children “ . This line breaks the heart and it turns out to be emotional .
